Tesla China has revealed their Cybertruck-inspired charger, referred to as the "Cybervault." The new charger was unveiled on Tesla's official Weibo account, generating buzz among the Chinese public and sparking speculation about its features.
The Cybervault is a weather-proof lockbox that contains Tesla's mobile charger inside. The charger is protected against theft through a key and combination lock on the side. The side of the unit also features a dock for the charging handle.
The charger is a hardwired version of Tesla's mobile charger, which supports charging at up to 32A at 220 volts or 7kW. The charger and box weigh 28 lbs (13 kg). You can also buy an additional plug for the mobile charger, letting you remove it from the box and use it on the go.
The Cybervault costs $800 USD, which is significantly more than Tesla's mobile charger, but it also includes professional installation and a one-year warranty on the work performed.
While a weather-proof lockbox may be appealing, it's a shame that it doesn't appear to support Tesla's more powerful charger, the Wall Connector. At this time it doesn't look like Tesla has any plans to offer the product outside of China, but if they do, it'd very likely come without professional installation in other regions.
The unveiling of the Cybervault highlights Tesla's commitment to expanding its presence in the Chinese market. The automaker recently introduced the Model S and Model X in China, further solidifying its position in the competitive automotive landscape.
