Following the recent unveiling of the longer, 6-seater Model Y L in China, a key new detail has emerged that tells us a bit more about what Tesla is aiming to do with the vehicle, and it’s more than just luxury transport. A Chinese Tesla executive has confirmed on Chinese social media that the new Model Y L won’t just be a comfortable people-hauler; it will also double as a versatile utility vehicle that blends premium features with practicality.
Full-Scene Feature
In a post on Chinese social media, Tesla Executive Tao Lin confirmed that all four rear seats in the Model Y L will be able to fold completely flat. This is a huge change from the 6-seater Model X with captain chairs in the second row. The captain chairs don’t fold down, preventing users from being able to sleep in the vehicle or having a cargo area as large as the five or seven-seat variants.
Being able to fold down the second and third rows creates a large, flat, and highly usable cargo area from the back of the front seats to the rear liftgate, similar to the space you’d find in a small cargo van.
Lin specifically described the vehicle as a “full-scene 6-seat luxury SUV.” In the Chinese market, the term “full-scene” implies this exact kind of versatility - a vehicle designed to handle everything a customer might want to throw at it, from carrying a full family to hauling large items.
That’s a new level of practicality for Tesla - but not completely unheard of. Tesla previously launched a 2-seater Model Y variant in France, aimed at commercial customers. While that variant is no longer available, the Model Y L with its fold-down second and third-row seats will have a similarly large amount of space available.

Luxury and Utility
This new feature is expected to be a big selling point for the new luxury Model Y L in China, in addition to the six seats and the roomier interior.

The Model Y L will be able to handle up to 6 passengers or serve as a versatile hauler with a massive, flat floor for equipment, luggage, or even shopping. The Model Y L is expected to have similar interior room as the 6-seater Model X at a fraction of the price, so expect it to be a big seller.
While we remain unsure whether the Model Y L will ever reach North America or Europe, we’re confident that this feature would be a major selling point.
