Tesla has once again massively expanded its Robotaxi service area in Austin, Texas, doubling the geofence for the second time in rapid succession. The network in Austin now covers approximately 85 square miles (220 square kilometers), which shows Tesla’s confidence in the Robotaxi thus far.
A Pattern of Exponential Growth
The Austin rollout has followed a relatively clear and aggressive pattern of growth. This latest third expansion is another step in scaling up the network’s reach and capabilities. We’ve seen the network expand in Austin in three times so far:
Phase 1: Initial Service Area of ~20 sq mi (52 sq km)
Phase 2: Expansion 1 to ~40 sq mi (104 sq km)
Phase 3: Expansion 2 of ~85 sq mi (220 sq km)
This pattern of quickly doubling the operational zone says a lot about what Tesla is seeing in terms of safety and reliability data in their network throughout Austin. If Tesla was seeing any significant number of disengagements or support calls, they’d choose to work through issues instead of expanding.

More Cars, More Invites
With the service area now significantly larger, Tesla will likely need to expand the fleet to maintain reasonable wait times across the larger service area.
That also means a new wave of invites to the Robotaxi Early Access program should be sent out, allowing more people to experience the service firsthand.
As Tesla continues its dual rollouts in Austin, as well as the recently launched Bay Area, the aggressive pace of expansion in Texas indicates that they’ll likely continue focusing their efforts on scaling the network.
Tesla recently introduced dynamic pricing to the Robotaxi network and plans a 10x increase in the service area in Austin in the future.
Tesla has also continuously updated the Robotaxi app, which has seen four to five iterations with new and improved features since the network was launched just six weeks ago.
We’ll likely begin seeing Tesla look to expand to other cities on its list in the near future, including Arizona and Florida, as well as other Texan cities closer to Austin.
