A new Tesla patent has revealed that Tesla is developing an advanced aerodynamic system based on a principle so powerful and effective that it was famously banned from Formula 1 for making cars too fast.
The technology, which generates massive downforce without the need for large, conventional wings, is almost certainly a key piece of the performance puzzle for the long-awaited, next-gen Tesla Roadster
The patent, US12-337-920-B1, was published on August 5th, 2025, and titled “Vehicle air duct system for cooling and generating downforce.”
Ground Effect and the Fan Car
To understand the significance of this patent, we have to look back at a legendary piece of motorsport history. In 1978, the Brabham BT46B Formula 1 car, better known as the Fan Car, used a large fan to suck air out from underneath the car aggressively.
This creates a vacuum effect that essentially glues the car to the track, allowing it to take corners at extremely high speeds. The advantage was so overwhelming that the technology was banned after just a single race. This concept of using low pressure under the car’s chassis to create downforce is known as ground effect.
Tesla’s Modernized Approach
Tesla’s new patent details a more modern and elegant way to achieve a similar ground effect without a fan. The system is centered around a large internal air duct that runs from an inlet at the front of the vehicle to an outlet at the rear.
The duct is shaped to narrow and then widen, creating a Venturi effect that forces the air inside to accelerate to a high velocity. According to Bernoulli’s principle, this fast-moving air has lower pressure, creating a powerful suction effect that helps to pull the vehicle’s body down onto the road, creating additional downforce.
The best part is that Tesla has adapted this system to serve a dual purpose. The high-velocity air is passed through a heat exchanger within the duct, providing hyper-efficient cooling for the battery and powertrain components.
The Roadster’s Second Secret Weapon
While the patent doesn’t name a particular vehicle, the technology is a perfect fit for the extreme performance goals of the next-gen Roadster. To achieve its promised, record-shattering acceleration and cornering capabilities, the Roadster will need an incredible amount of grip. This internal downforce system provides that grip, all without the need for a massive, drag-inducing rear wing. In fact, the patent explicitly states that a goal of the system is to reduce or eliminate the need for external aerodynamic elements like spoilers and wings.
This patented system, likely to be paired with the previously announced SpaceX package of cold gas thrusters, is another clear sign that the next-generation Roadster is being engineered with a level of technology that will set it apart from any other car on the road.
