Tesla has now officially unveiled the new Model Y L in China after showing off a teaser video yesterday. We now have a list of features and specs for the vehicle, and it’s surprising how many new features Tesla packed into this larger Model Y.
This isn’t just a six-seat version of the Model Y; the vehicle is noticeably larger, and Tesla has added various new features not found in any other Tesla, even compared to the new Model Y, which was released just seven months ago.
The biggest changes for the Model Y L are the size and the seats themselves, but there are a lot of other changes that beat out even the Model X, such as improved phone chargers and seat functionality.
We’ll cover everything new below and compare it to the regular Model Y and the six-seat Model X.
Front Seats

Let’s start with the new seats, which are one of the biggest differences in this vehicle. Tesla created brand new seats, which include several improvements over the seats in the new Model Y and even the Model X. The front seats are heated and ventilated just like the Model Y, but they also include adjustable headrests and powered, adjustable thigh support (see video above).
The thigh support is another knob located on the side of the seat that lets passengers raise or lower the support bar.
Second Row Seats
The second row seats feature many of the same features as the front row, except for thigh support. These may be some of Tesla’s most interesting seats today. They’re ventilated and heated, a first for Tesla outside of the front row. They also include adjustable headrests similar to those in the front row and add a powered armrest that can be adjusted through a button on the side of the seat.
Another first for Tesla, these rear seats can power fold down, letting the vehicle have a huge cargo area space that beats out even the Model X six-seater.

While the third row seats offer a lot less, Tesla still made them heated and power-folding just like the Model Y. This allows users to fold down or up the second and third row seats by pressing the buttons in the trunk of the vehicle.
There are two USB-C ports in the third row between both seats, so that users can charge their devices. Tesla also added side airbags to the third row for the first time, something the Model X currently lacks.

Screens
Tesla kept the single display up front as expected, but increased its size from 15.4”, up to 16”. There are several smaller changes like this that really make us wonder why Tesla they weren’t added into the Model Y refresh this past January, and whether these changes will find their way to other models.
The rear screen in the vehicle remains at 8”, which is slightly smaller than the 9.4” one available in the Cybertruck and Model S and X. This is likely due to the width of the vehicle, which is about 5” less wide than the Model X.
Acceleration and Range
Tesla lists the Model Y L as achieving a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) at 4.5 seconds, which is faster than what Tesla lists on its German site for the Model Y AWD at 4.8 seconds. Tesla has the Model Y achieving a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.6 seconds in the US, so the Model Y L is surprisingly a little faster than the lighter Model Y.
As for range, Tesla lists the Model Y L getting 751 km on a full charge, according to CLTC. However, CLTC is often much more generous than the EPA. For comparison, the Model Y AWD gets 750 km CLTC in China, so expect the Model Y L to achieve the same range as the regular Model Y, which is currently 327 miles EPA in the U.S.
New Wheels
Tesla also introduced new 19” wheels with the Model Y L, which likely help it achieve the 751 km of range.
Wireless Phone Chargers
This is another one of those improvements that we expect to make its way into other vehicles in the future. Tesla updated the wireless phone chargers' design, so that the vegan leather now wraps around the phone chargers.
However, the biggest change is the increase in power and cooling. Tesla has updated the charger from 30 watts to 50 watts on the driver’s side, while the passenger side charger remains at 30 watts.
More importantly, Tesla also added active cooling, which likely lets them achieve the higher charging speeds. There’s now a fan and air ducts that help cool down the phone while it’s sitting on the charger.
Vehicle Dimensions
The Model Y L is significantly longer than the regular Model Y, but the width of the vehicle remains the same. The vehicle is 65.7” in height, up about 2” from the regular Model Y and just slightly shorter than the Model X. The length is 195.9”, a little more than 7” longer than the regular Model Y.

Cargo / Storage
Thanks to the power foldable second row seats, this vehicle has the best of both worlds, captain chairs with an aisle and a large cargo space.
According to Tesla, the Model Y has 76 cubic feet of cargo room, while the Model Y L has a whopping 89.6 cu ft thanks to its increased height and length. The Model X features 94.5 cu ft of cargo room, slightly more than the Model L Y.
A nice touch is that Tesla has added a magnetic latch to the sub-trunk cover, so that when you lift the cover, it can magnetically cling to the back of the third row seats and remain open (video below)

Spoiler & Suspension
The Model Y L features a new, wrap-around spoiler that has an integrated brake light. While it was likely added for additional stability due to the vehicle height and additional length, it looks really nice as well.
Tesla says that it has also improved the suspension in the Model Y L with continuously variable damping shock absorbers.
Speakers
Tesla has also improved the audio in the new Model Y L. While the regular Model Y includes 15 speakers and a subwoofer, the Model Y L adds three additional speakers.
Price
Tesla has priced the Model Y L at ¥339,000, which is roughly $47,200. However, prices vary from region to region and we should expect a higher premium in other parts of the world upon arrival.
In the US, the Model Y AWD currently sells for $48,990, while in China, the vehicle sells for about $43,500, meaning that the Model Y L carries about a $4,000 premium over the standard AWD Model Y.
When this vehicle finally arrives in North America, we expect it to start at about $52,000 - $54,000.
Release
While the Model Y L has officially been unveiled in China and is now orderable through Tesla’s site, we also expect it to arrive in North America and Europe in the future. In China, deliveries will begin next month.
It’ll be interesting to see if Tesla makes any changes before the vehicle arrives in other regions, but we expect it to arrive mainly untouched.
We’ve already seen Tesla testing out the Model Y L in Germany, so it may not be much longer before we start hearing news about production beginning there.
