With the recent launch of the Luxe Package, Tesla has reintroduced Lifetime Supercharging, a perk many owners didn’t think would return. While the amenity includes free Supercharging at more than 7,500 Superchargers worldwide, it also comes with some major changes that the buyer should be aware of.
Tesla’s updated Lifetime Supercharging perk effectively ends the era of the benefit being a transferable, vehicle-based asset.
The new terms, which have appeared on Tesla’s website and in the Tesla app, clarify that the popular benefit is now tied specifically to the original owner’s Tesla Account and cannot be transferred to a new owner if the vehicle is sold — essentially eliminating any resell benefits.
This transforms what was once a permanent vehicle feature into a personal, non-transferable benefit. However, there’s more to it.

Non-Transferable
The updated Lifetime Supercharging terms are unambiguous. The offer is now tied to your Tesla Account and cannot be transferred to another vehicle, person, or order, even in the case of ownership transfer.
This single sentence redefines the lifetime aspect of the perk. Here’s what it means in practice. If you buy a Tesla with a Lifetime Supercharging offer, that specific vehicle will have free Supercharging for as long as you own it under your account. If you go on to sell that car, the benefit is lost, and does not transfer to the new owner, even if it was an ownership transfer to a family member.
Personal Use Only
Tesla also notes that free Supercharging is only available for personal vehicles and for personal use. You won’t be able to use it if your vehicle is used for ridesharing or delivery services, such as Uber, DoorDash, or other commercial purposes.
Tesla states that it will remove the free lifetime Supercharging benefit from a vehicle if it determines that the vehicle is being used for commercial purposes.
Used Market Impact
This change will have a massive impact on the used Tesla market going forward. For years, older Model S and Model X vehicles with transferable free Lifetime Supercharging commanded a significant price premium. It was a major selling point that could add thousands of dollars to a vehicle’s resale value, as the new owner could inherit the unlimited road tripping magic.
Under these new terms, that value proposition is closed for any future sales. The perk now vanishes upon the transfer of ownership, meaning a used Tesla with this feature is no more valuable from a charging perspective than one without.
Closing Loopholes and Fine Print
The new terms also include several other clarifications designed to tighten the rules and prevent abuse of the system. The promotion now explicitly excludes used vehicles, business orders, and vehicles used for commercial purposes.
Tesla is trying to prevent abuse from rideshare drivers who are using Supercharging for free between rides, or those trying to power their homes from the Cybertruck’s massive battery, rather than individuals embarking on a cross-country road trip.
While these changes make the Lifetime Supercharger feature less appealing, they make sense and could lead Tesla to continue offering the perk in the future. Lifetime Supercharging on older vehicles caused additional congestion at Superchargers, so this is one way to reduce that.
This change, while a financially prudent move for Tesla as its fleet grows bigger, marks the end of one of the most iconic and valuable perks in EV history. New owners can use the benefit, but the used Tesla market won’t be quite the same without seeing vehicles with free Lifetime Supercharging.
