As Tesla’s Robotaxi program continues to mature, they’re starting to adjust requirements for proper commercial operation. First among these is updating the passenger policy to allow for more riders, as well as younger guests, making the service more practical for everyday use.
The new rules, which increase the passenger capacity and formally allow for teenage guests, are a sign that the Robotaxi network is shifting from a tech demo to a real-world transportation service.
This is a welcome and logical next step as the service continues to expand in Austin and the Bay Area. While the app is now available in the iOS App Store, riders still need to join a waitlist before they can take a ride.
Passenger Limit Increase
The first major change is an increase in passenger capacity. Each robotaxi, which is essentially a Model Y with a couple of changes, will now accommodate up to three passengers per ride, an increase from the previous limit of two passengers.
While that’s a seemingly small change, increasing the capacity by 50% has a massive impact on the service’s utility. While the Cybercab will eventually only allow two passengers, Tesla is taking full advantage of the extra space in the Model Y.
The two-passenger limit was perfect for individuals and couples, but it excluded countless common scenarios. The new three-passenger rule now officially accommodates small groups of friends or colleagues headed to a meeting or a night out.
More importantly, it also opens the door for small families, such as two parents and a child, to use the service together. This single change dramatically expands the addressable market and the number of practical use cases for the service.
Bringing Older Kids Along
In another step towards making the service more family-friendly, Tesla has also introduced a formal policy for younger guests. Adult users can now bring guests ages 13 and up on Robotaxi rides.
It’s now officially possible for families with teenagers to use the service, as long as an adult is also riding along. While Tesla will need to allow younger children on board eventually, this is dramatically matter than the previous requirement of riders needing to be 18 years old.
Weight Limit
Alongside the expanded passenger rules, Tesla has also formalized the physical limits of its vehicles by instituting a maximum weight limit of 800lbs between all passengers. This is a clear-cut, commercial style of ruling to protect Tesla’s vehicles from misuse, similar to what you’d find with any other taxi provider, autonomous or human-driven.
These policy changes show that Tesla is ironing out some of the details before expanding its Robotaxi service to the public. They’re transforming Robotaxi from a novel one or two-person experience into a practical, real-world transportation service that now caters to a much broader audience, including groups and families.
