Tesla has once again updated its referral program in the United States, introducing new incentives for its more premium vehicles. The discount for new buyers purchasing a Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck using a referral link has quadrupled, jumping from $250 to a substantial $1,000.
This is the first increase for buyers rewards in recent months, as Tesla has been gradually reducing incentives.
While the benefits for the Model S, Model X and Cybertruck have increased, the buyer benefits for Model 3 and Model Y buyers remain the same when the buyer uses a referral code, which includes three months of FSD. The referrer continues to receive $250 for Model 3 and Model Y purchases.
Breaking Down the Benefits
Tesla’s referral program has been a part of its direct-to-customer sales model for years, helping to turn its most passionate owners into the most passionate salespeople. The latest update makes the program’s benefits more distinct:
For Buyers of the Model S, X, and Cybertruck: The headline benefit is the $1,000 discount applied directly to the vehicle’s purchase price. This is a significant discount and helps to ease the increased cost of the now mandatory Luxe Package on the Model S, Model X, and Cyberbeast (the AWD Cybertruck does not come with the Luxe package at this time).
For Buyers of the Model 3 and Model Y: The benefit for buyers of Tesla’s high-volume models remains at three free months of FSD (Supervised). This allows new owners to experience Tesla’s most advanced driver-assistance features firsthand on their new vehicles.
For Buyers of Tesla Solar: For buyers of Tesla Energy products, the referral reward also remains unchanged at $400.
For the Referrer: The reward for the person making the referral remains consistent at $250 for each successful referral, regardless of the model. These benefits are still limited to 10 total referrals for the calendar year.
American Heroes Discount: For those in the US who are verified military veterans, retirees, active-duty members, their spouses, surviving spouses, first responders, students, and teachers, you are eligible to receive a $1,000 discount that is stackable with the existing referral discount.
As a note, the referral benefit change is also valid for residents of Puerto Rico.
Why the Change?
The decision to dramatically increase the incentive for the premium lineup could be seen as a sign that Tesla wants to move more of its flagship vehicles, which have seen a downward trend.
For prospective buyers of Tesla’s premium lineup, this is a welcome benefit and matches Tesla’s $1,000 loyalty discount for existing owners.
