Tesla is transforming the delivery experience by providing buyers a free preview of Robotaxi when they pick up their new vehicle at Giga Texas. In the new offer, Tesla is providing customers with 24-hour access to its Robotaxi service in Austin.
Access to the Robotaxi will open at midnight on your pickup day and remain available until 11:59 pm. This allows buyers to use Robotaxi to get to Giga Texas to pick up their vehicle, eliminating the need to take another car and drive separately on their way home.
The new perk, detailed in a message sent through the Tesla app, appears to be designed to attract more local Robotaxi users. It also lets customers experience FSD in a Tesla, possibly for the first time, potentially converting more customers to purchase or subscribe to FSD.
This comes on the heels of the completion of Tesla’s brand-new delivery center at Giga Texas.
The Robotaxi Experience
According to the notification, the process for new owners is straightforward. As part of the Giga Texas pickup experience, customers are instructed to download the dedicated Robotaxi app and sign in with their existing Tesla account.
The offer is designed to be shared, allowing the new owner to bring up to two guests along for their rides. The only condition is that the owner must remain present with their guests at all times during the trip.
Safety Monitor Confirmed
An important detail in the announcement confirms that Tesla is still maintaining the Safety Monitor in its Robotaxi fleet during these rides. The message states that a Tesla safety employee will be in the vehicle during the trip to ensure a safe and seamless experience.
Tesla is confident enough with Robotaxi to expand access to a wider group of users, but it’s doing so with human supervision still in place. While Musk has said that Robotaxi plans to remove the safety driver that’s in place for highway trips by the end of the year, there has been no mention of when Tesla plans to remove the safety monitor from the vehicle.
Onboarding FSD
Beyond being an exciting perk, this offer is a fantastic way to onboard people to FSD. It is a powerful marketing tool that helps people experience FSD in one of the safest ways possible.
Tesla has recently been trying to increase the take rate of FSD. Tesla is expected to soon update the design studio, allowing new buyers to purchase, subscribe, or get a few months of FSD when purchasing their vehicle. Tesla also shared the take rate for FSD for the first time, claiming that they’re seeing an uptick in FSD purchases.
While subscribing to FSD is the best option for most owners, we’d love to see Tesla allow financing of the FSD option after the vehicle is sold.
We believe that this complimentary Robotaxi pass is a means to increase exposure to the Robotaxi network and boost FSD subscriptions.
New owners and their families are very likely to post and speak of their futuristic ride, generating a wave of positive, organic marketing for Robotaxi and FSD.
While a human safety employee is still part of the experience for now, this new perk shows that Tesla is ready to continue expanding its Robotaxi services to more users and likely a larger geofence soon.
