Tesla Adds Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Support to Model Y Performance

The technological divide between the Cybertruck and the rest of Tesla’s lineup is finally starting to shrink, and in one of the best ways possible to start. Tesla confirmed today that the new Model Y Performance, launched on September 30th in the United States, is the first vehicle outside of the Cybertruck to ship with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities.

This long-awaited feature adds a powerful layer of utility to Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, allowing owners to export power directly from their vehicle’s massive high-voltage battery.

How It Works & What You Can Power

The V2L system on the new Model Y Performance is designed for simplicity and portability. Using the Tesla Outlet Adapter for the Mobile Connector, which was previously intended for the now-canceled Cybertruck Long Range, owners of the Performance variant will be able to draw 120V at 20A AC, directly from their vehicle’s charge port. That’s a maximum power output of 2.4kW or 2,400 watts.

This provides enough power for a wide range of practical applications. At a campsite, it can run lights, speakers, a small refrigerator, or charge all of your electronics. For a DIY project or remote worksite, it can power most corded tools or charge your equipment. In a pinch during a power outage, that 20A outlet could be a lifeline, keeping essential devices like a Starlink, routers, medical equipment, or a water pump running.

Not Quite the Same as the Cybertruck

This V2L feature is the first example of the Cybertruck’s advanced bidirectional power technology trickling down to the rest of the fleet. However, it's important to contextualize the capability. The Model Y Performance offers a solid, two-outlet solution. The Cybertruck, by comparison, features a full PowerShare system with five dedicated onboard outlets, including a powerful 240V 40A plug in the bed, for a total continuous load of 9.6kW, 4x the power of the Model Y Performance.

While the V2L feature of the Model Y Performance enables it to power tools and standalone equipment, the Cybertruck’s capabilities allow it to power an entire home.

The Model Y Performance’s V2L is a fantastic feature that brings much-needed functionality to the lineup for the first time, but the Cybertruck remains in a class of its own in terms of raw power output.

What’s Missing: V2H

Tesla has been clear that while the Model Y Performance now supports V2L, they did not state anything about the hardware or software for full Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) home backup. This remains a key differentiator for the Cybertruck’s PowerShare system, which, when paired with a Universal Wall Connector and Tesla Gateway, can provide up to 11.5kW of power to seamlessly run a home during an outage.

Coming to More Vehicles?

The obvious question on everyone’s mind is whether this feature will expand to more vehicles. While all Teslas can output power through their charge ports, as demonstrated by third-party accessories, Tesla may be restricting this capability due to battery degradation. The Model Y Performance features new Panasonic battery cells that may be capable of more charge cycles, allowing Tesla to feel more confident in providing this feature while still meeting its warranty goals.

Currently, we don’t know whether Tesla has finally included a dedicated inverter for V2L, like the Cybertruck, or if they’re using a software trick that has been exploited by third parties.

If they’re using new hardware or if it’s due to the new batteries, that means only new vehicles will support V2L. If not, then it is possible that this feature could eventually be introduced to the rest of Tesla’s lineup with a simple software update.

The addition of V2L to the Model Y Performance is a serious and welcome upgrade that makes the Model Y Performance a viable option even for buyers who don’t want the extra performance. Thanks to V2L, the free exterior paint options and the free upgrade to the white interior, it could offset the $8,500 premium that Tesla is asking over the Long Range AWD model.

This is the first indication that bi-directional capabilities are no longer a niche feature and will be added to all of Tesla’s models in the future.
