For years, Santa Mode has been the undisputed king of Tesla’s visualization easter eggs, a charming feature that transforms your car into a sleigh (or the Cybertruck into the Cyber-sleigh). Now, a new challenger has entered the Grid.
In collaboration with Disney for the launch of the new Tron: Ares movie, Tesla has released Tron Mode with software update 2025.38.3 and later. But this is much more than a simple reskin of the on-screen vehicle. While fans of the series will no doubt enjoy the easter egg, the visualization should be exciting for anyone, as it’s a massive change in what Tesla has done with visualizations in the past. This will lay the groundwork for new visualizations to come.

Tron Mode Features
Currently available in the ToyBox for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with an AMD Ryzen processor, the new Tron mode is an audio and visual overhaul of your vehicle’s visualization. When activated, your Tesla in the on-screen visualization is replaced by a sleek Lightcycle, complete with a masked driver. When you’re driving, the Lightcycle realistically tilts into the turn and leaves a glowing light trail behind it.
When parked, the driver dismounts and stands beside the cycle.

Sounds & Ambient Lighting
However, the experience begins even before you sit in the vehicle. As you enter the vehicle, there’s a custom Tron intro screen and startup sound. Tron Mode also plays the Tron: Ares intro music and even includes a unique Tron-esque turn signal sound and lock sound. For vehicles with ambient lighting, a special red-themed lighting mode is automatically enabled, immersing your cabin into the Grid.

A New Standard in Visualization Quality
What makes Tron Mode so impressive is how it improves upon Tesla’s pre-existing Santa Mode formula in almost every way possible.
While the sleigh in Santa Mode is a fun model swap with a fairly static model, the Lightcycle is a fully animated asset that behaves like a real motorcycle, tilting, and leaving the iconic Tron trail. With a unique vehicle startup animation to boot, it’s clear that Tesla put some real time and effort into making this a fun experience.
One of the biggest gripes with Santa Mode is the loud Christmas music that you can’t control the volume of. You can’t pause or stop it and just need to wait for it to play out. While Santa Mode is fun, the loud music gets old fast.
Tesla has clearly listened to customer feedback about that particular item, as the Tron intro music can be paused using the standard media controls. The addition of an intro sound and the improved visual effects make this a much more complete package.
The ambient cabin lighting for the grid-style effect is also a step further than Santa Mode, which currently just rotates the cabin colors between red, white, and green.
Optimus and xAI Tie-Ins
Tesla and xAI have also been hard at work with this tie-in, with the recent unveiling of a Tron: Ares themed Optimus robot at the Hollywood launch of Tron: Ares.

xAI’s 3D characters - Ani and Valentine - have both been updated to include Tron outfits for those who interact with xAI’s Grok personalities in the Grok App. There’s been a lot happening behind the scenes for this tie-in
More than an Ad
While some may view a movie tie-in as a form of “in-vehicle advertising,” this is a 100% optional feature hidden within the Toybox. It doesn’t detract from the development of core features like FSD, which has its own entire engineering team on it. Instead, it serves as a fantastic party trick that builds on the tradition of fun Easter eggs and features that have always been a part of Tesla’s charm.
Ultimately, Tron Mode is a brilliantly executed and highly detailed addition to the Toybox. It raises the bar for quality and immersion, and leaves us excited for what other themes could be coming. Full-blown Halloween themes, an updated Santa Mode, or themes for major franchises like Star Wars could all be fun to have in your vehicle.
