Shortly after its debut in the United States, Tesla’s new, more affordable Model Y Standard is taking its first step towards global expansion with a European rollout. The entry-level model is now available for order in select European countries, with first deliveries expected to begin in November. This new model will also be produced at Giga Berlin.
European Changes
For the European market, Tesla is leading with a strong value proposition. The Model Y Standard is being advertised with a highly competitive 534 km of WLTP range. The US variant is rated at approximately 516 km of EPA range (321 miles). WLTP ranges are slightly more generous than EPA ranges, leading to this discrepancy.
Crucially, though, Tesla is pushing the affordability angle even further in Europe with the introduction of an aggressive leasing program. In some European countries, the Model Y Standard is being offered for as low as €299 per month before incentives.
That’s an extremely affordable price that helps dramatically lower the barrier to entry for prospective owners and makes the cost of ownership competitive with many traditional ICE vehicles.
The marketing for the European Model highlights the inclusion of core Tesla features, including the 15.4" touchscreen with Tesla Theater, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and access to the full suite of safety and convenience features like Sentry Mode, Dog Mode, and the Tesla app.
One key differentiator in Europe is that the vehicle includes Basic Autopilot. In the US, Tesla offers buyers two options: use the included Traffic-aware Cruise Control or buy/subscribe to FSD.
Since FSD isn’t available in Europe, it appears Tesla has decided to leave Basic Autopilot in place, making the vehicle a better value.
By highlighting these core software and convenience features, Tesla is framing the discussion not around what's missing compared to the Premium trim, but the advantages the Standard model holds over competitors in its new price class.
Giga Berlin Begins Production
These new vehicles will be produced at Gigafactory Berlin, in line with expectations, as Tesla prefers to regionally locate vehicle production lines as much as possible. By tasking Giga Berlin with building its new entry-level model, Tesla is leveraging local production to directly challenge the growing number of European and Chinese EV competitors in the continent's fiercely competitive market.
While Tesla is emphasizing the "features you love," the European Model Y Standard will have all of the same "de-contenting" compromises as its US counterpart—with the exception of Autopilot—to achieve its lower price point.
The swift, back-to-back launches in North America and Europe confirm that Tesla plans for the new "Standard" trim to be an important part of its global strategy to drive volume and make its most popular vehicle more accessible than ever.
