Tesla introduced targeted camera cleaning with FSD V14 - using a clever combination of multiple wipes and fluid spraying. However, there’s a lot more engineering that went into this than people realize. The Robotaxi-style camera cleaning targets the roughly 3-by-5-inch area used by the front-facing cameras, cleaning it as well as possible.
While this feature helps clean the critical area of the windshield as fast as possible, it’s not available on all vehicles — yet.
Limited Rollout
Right out of the gate, this feature is restricted to the new Model Y. Tesla AI Engineer Yun-Ta Tsai confirmed the restriction in a series of responses on X, explaining why the feature is currently limited.
The holdup is the engineering work that Tesla has to do behind the scenes to get everything to sync up perfectly. There’s a lot that goes into making this function - namely, coordination, as it is challenging to sync fluid bursts with wiper timing. Tesla is even accounting for the vehicle’s speed and wind, since they can affect the fluid placement on the windshield.
We can’t help but think that this may be over-engineered. However, it’s possible that dirt and grime may be causing a bigger issue than we’re aware of.
Due to differences in model shapes, wiper sizes, pumps, and actuators, it seems Tesla will need to adjust the wiping process for each vehicle.
Legacy Y Support Soon
Since Tesla didn’t change the motor and actuator between the legacy Model Y and the refreshed Model Y, this feature should be simple for Tesla to enable on legacy HW4 Model Ys. No extra engineering required here; Tesla should be able to directly apply what they’ve done on the new Model Y to the legacy model as well.
CyberWipe?
An interesting question raised here will be the Cybertruck’s mega-sized wiper. Tesla has already made changes to the Cybertruck’s wiper to improve cleaning of salt and road grime, but keeping the world’s largest consumer windshield clean will be a challenge.
The solution to the Cybertruck’s previous wiper issue was simply to use more fluid, but it will be interesting to see if Tesla’s AI team can engineer a Cybertruck-specific solution, especially since the vehicle still hasn’t received FSD V14.
Given that FSD V14.1.4 is finally rolling out to Model S and X vehicles alongside the Model 3 and Model Y, this feature is likely on the to-do list for the Tesla AI Engineering team, alongside tons of other key features that could be introduced in FSD V14.2 and FSD V14.3.
