Tesla Expands Robotaxi Again -- Now 12X Bigger Than Original Size

Tesla’s Robotaxi program in Austin continues its relentless growth, with the service area now encompassing a staggering 245 sq mi (637 sq km). This marks the fourth expansion in just as many months, transforming what started as a modest 20 sq mi pilot program into a sprawling network that’s nearly 12 times its original size.

The updated service area has been integrated into the Robotaxi app, as a user on X discovered the updated geofence and Tesla’s Robotaxi account, then shared the update. Robotaxi can now take you from nearly one end of Austin to the other, all without a human driver involved.

The Updated Area

The expanded footprint pushes Robotaxi’s reach well beyond its previous limits. The northern edges now stretch just shy of Kings Village in the North and incorporate many residential hubs and commuter corridors.

To the east, coverage extends all the way out to Forest Bluff, while West Lake Hills and Maple Run are all included on the West Side. To the south, McKinney Park and Stoney Ridge are also just within the new boundaries.

While the Austin airport is well within the geofence Tesla reached in its last expansion, the terminals are not yet accessible by ride-hailers. However, Tesla recently added support for airport terminals in the Robotaxi app and has now started accepting drop-offs at San Jose International Airport. However, those areas still include a human behind the wheel.

This new 245 sq mi zone, roughly 40% larger than the last iteration, covers a mix of dense downtown streets, highway merges, and quieter neighborhoods. Think of just how much data Tesla is pulling in on real-world edge cases, from construction detours in South Austin to school zones up north. There’s a lot for Robotaxi to learn here.

Broader & More Accessible

For those who have gained access in Austin, the benefits are immediate and tangible. Tesla previously confirmed at the Q3 2025 Earnings Call that they’re already working to deploy even more Robotaxis throughout Austin, which will mean reduced wait times and more accessibility for when you need a ride at the last minute.

No longer confined to a central bubble, users can now summon Robotaxis to sprawling suburbs or remote areas at the edge of the service area, and zip downtown for a fancy coffee and back at a fairly low cost—and all without any human intervention (safety monitor notwithstanding).

Removing Safety Monitors

With cumulative FSD miles already exceeding 6 billion globally, Austin’s Robotaxi miles are helping expand the data in increasingly diverse situations. This helps to move Tesla closer towards its goal of removing the Robotaxi safety monitors from vehicles in Austin by the end of the year, as intervention rates continue to fall.

Shareholders Meeting

Tesla previously surpassed Waymo’s Austin operations in their last expansion, reclaiming the lead in sheer coverage. Waymo’s more cautious scaling pales against Tesla’s generalized solution, but the real prize is reliability and price at scale.
