Tesla is making the holidays a little more futuristic this year by letting owners gift something truly unique — a FSD subscription. Just as the holiday season starts to kick into gear, the company plans to offer the ability for users to gift FSD subscriptions.
The suggestion was made by Sawyer Merritt on X, when Raj Jegannathan from Tesla chimed in, saying Tesla will make it available before the holidays.
How We Expect It to Work
The process of purchasing an FSD subscription will likely be very similar to buying a gift card. You likely won’t have to choose the owner or the vehicle and will simply buy a month or multiple months of FSD, which can then be passed on and redeemed by anyone.
While gifting an FSD subscription isn’t very different than giving a $100 gift card, it makes the gift a little more personal.
Tesla currently doesn’t offer FSD subscriptions in every region where FSD is available, but that’s expected to change as Tesla continues to push FSD. Subscriptions are currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The price varies by region, with it costing $99/month in the US and Canada.
Why Tesla Is Doing This Now
Tesla’s FSD is finally at a stage where the casual buyer will find it convenient and safe. If they had done this any earlier, they could potentially turn off buyers from FSD by having them try it too early.
Tesla has several ways it's trying to push FSD, and one likely reason is that reaching 10 million FSD subscriptions is one of Musk’s milestones in his $1 trillion pay package.
Being able to gift an FSD subscription is a great idea to increase adoption. While subscriptions will be gifted to users who want them, they’ll likely also be gifted to users who have never tried it or may not even know it exists. Some of these subscriptions will stick, and the giftee will continue to subscribe, increasing Tesla’s FSD revenue.
While Tesla wasn’t specific, they’re unlikely to offer the ability to purchase FSD for someone, as in the complete purchase of FSD, which has stood at a hefty $8,000 in the US since April 2024. However, you’ll likely be able to pick the number of months of FSD you want to gift.
