Tesla Cybercab Prototype Spotted Driving in Downtown Austin

While the world saw the Tesla Cybercab drive itself smoothly around the Warner Bros. lot in October of 2024, seeing one on public roads is a different story. A sharp-eyed enthusiast in downtown Austin has spotted a Cybercab testing in the wild - with a human safety supervisor in the “driver’s” seat.

Testing Robotaxi

The vehicle, sporting Texas Manufacturer plates and the signature matte-gold finish, was photographed navigating downtown Austin traffic. Unlike the pristine, mirrorless prototypes shown at the We, Robot event, though, this engineering mule was equipped with a pair of tiny side mirrors and, likely, a steering wheel.

The triangular, temporary side mirrors are fitted to ensure compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), which require the presence of mirrors in an operator-controlled vehicle.

While the poster could not confirm the presence of a steering wheel due to the angle, the presence of a safety monitor in the front seat and the side mirrors implies that Tesla is using this engineering mule to begin safety and regulatory testing ahead of mass production.

We have previously seen temporary steering wheels fitted to Cybercabs at Giga Texas, so this element isn’t anything new or surprising. 

Why the Human?

We’ve recently seen driverless Model Y Robotaxi vehicles on the streets of Austin, fully autonomous, so why the human safety monitor?

The answer is two-fold. First, while Tesla’s Cybercab is designed to have no steering wheel or pedals, current FMVSS regulations require manual controls and mirrors for vehicles deployed on public roads. Tesla has been pushing regulators to set federal-level rules for Robotaxis to eliminate unnecessary parts, but for now, these engineering test vehicles will still need them.

Not a Tesla App

The second is to gather real-world data and have an engineer watching what’s happening as the system is stress-tested. The qualitative data describing the drive and experience from the engineer in the seat will be a key part of ensuring that Cybercab trips are smooth and comfortable - not just safe.

Public Road Validation

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an engineering mule, but seeing one in downtown traffic rather than on the test tracks at Giga Texas is a sign that Tesla is entering a new phase of validation.

With Cybercab mass production to begin in April 2026, just four short months away, Tesla’s teams are working around the clock to have the vehicle ready to deploy and replace the Model Y on the roads in Austin and the Bay Area.
