Recent reports from the Financial Times suggested a massive shakeup within Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence empire, claiming that Ashok Elluswamy had stepped down from his role at Tesla to join SpaceX/xAI.
However, that is not entirely accurate. Ashok has not left his post as Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software. Instead, his responsibilities have massively expanded. He is now officially spearheading MACROHARD (also known as the Digital Optimus project), acting as the lead engineer for a massive joint venture that heavily integrates the engineering teams of both Tesla and xAI.
Taking to X this week, Ashok began actively recruiting top-tier engineering talent to join either company to help build out the future of AI.

MACROHARD
Announced earlier this week, the project is a groundbreaking AI initiative designed to act as an enterprise-grade digital worker. The internal codename, MACROHARD, is a direct and humorous jab at software giant Microsoft.
While Microsoft provides software to help companies operate, Elon envisions MACROHARD as an AI capable of emulating an entire company's operations. It is an autonomous system designed to log in to a computer and perform the office work a human employee would typically handle.
The Brains and the Hands
To accomplish this, MACROHARD utilizes a massive, two-part collaborative architecture that pulls from the strengths of both of Elon’s AI companies.
xAI’s Grok will act as the master conductor or brains of the operation. It uses its deep, macro-level reasoning and understanding of the world to dictate exactly what tasks need to be accomplished. Meanwhile, Tesla’s physical AI agents, whether it be a Model Y or an Optimus, navigate the world, process data, and physically interact with real objects around them.
Blurring the Corporate Lines
Ashok’s dual-recruitment push highlights the rapidly blurring lines between Elon’s various corporate entities.
This is no longer just a loose software partnership; it is a deeply integrated technical and financial ecosystem. Tesla recently invested roughly $2 billion into xAI, formally cementing the relationship.
By leading the development of MACROHARD across both Tesla AI and xAI, Ashok is essentially building the shared digital infrastructure that will power Tesla's physical Optimus robots, the upcoming Robotaxi fleet, and xAI's massive enterprise software ambitions.
Plus, as Elon revealed earlier this week, this software will run workloads simultaneously on Tesla’s in-house AI4 chips, utilizing the idle vehicle fleet and dedicated Supercharger nodes, alongside xAI’s massive Nvidia-based server clusters.
Under Ashok’s guidance, Tesla and xAI aren't just partnering; they are fusing their hardware and software capabilities to create an unparalleled, distributed supercomputer.
