Tesla is officially raising the bar for in-car entertainment, and it looks like its roomiest SUV is getting some special treatment. As the six-seater Model Y L begins its rollout into new markets, owners have discovered a completely new audio setting called “Immersive Sound X.”
This feature appears to be exclusive to the Model Y L, as it has not yet appeared on other models.
What is Immersive Sound X?
According to @electricfuture5, the vehicle’s menu states: "Immersive Sound X uses sound eXtraction to place the listener in front of a detailed soundstage within an Immersive space." The software allows for a high degree of personalization, noting that "The size of the immersive space can be adjusted using the immersive slider to match individual preferences. When set to Auto, immersion automatically adapts based on the type of media being played."
While this sounds like a high-end spatial audio format like Dolby Atmos, it is likely an advanced software filter. Since Tesla isn't receiving distinct audio for each channel, the system is likely taking a standard stereo signal and applying "sound extraction" to simulate a 3D environment. This is similar to how Dolby Pro Logic works, but likely tuned specifically for Tesla’s hardware.
To give the listener even more control, the system features an adjustable immersion slider that lets you manually scale the "size" of the virtual soundstage. This allows for a more personalized experience, letting you fine-tune how expansive or intimate the audio feels based on your specific taste.
The new "X" variant of the feature likely takes advantage of the Model Y L’s beefier hardware. As we noted in our Model Y L feature deep-dive, this version of the SUV includes 18 speakers and a subwoofer, which is three more speakers than the rest of the Model Y lineup. The car also features more microphones, which could be used to calibrate the soundstage in real-time.
Tesla’s Existing Immersive Sound Feature
To understand why this is a big deal, you have to look at what came before. Tesla’s standard Immersive Sound is a feature designed to widen the soundstage and create a surround-sound-like experience. It works by applying echo and reverb to make the cabin feel larger than it actually is.
Currently, standard Immersive Sound offers granular controls that let you move through incremental steps from low to high. While it works wonders for cinematic music, many drivers find themselves turning it off for things like podcasts or talk shows where a wide soundstage can make voices sound "hollow." Immersive Sound X could solve this with its "Auto" mode, which intelligently adjusts the level of immersion based on what you are listening to.
Model Y L Availability
The Model Y L is Tesla’s first true family-focused SUV, featuring a 150mm longer wheelbase and a true 2-2-2 seating layout. After being exclusive to China for nearly a year, the variant officially launched in Australia and New Zealand last week.
The vehicle has also received EU type approval and was recently approved for sale in South Korea, suggesting a wider global rollout is imminent. For those in North America, however, the wait might be a long one. Elon Musk previously stated that the three-row, six-seat model won’t arrive in the U.S. until late 2026, if it ever arrives at all.
As Tesla continues to push its software-driven approach to luxury, features like Immersive Sound X show that the company is finding new ways to make its premium variants stand out. Whether this feature eventually trickles down to the rest of the fleet remains to be seen, but for now, it is just another one of the reasons to opt for the "L."
