Tesla is shifting the timeline for its most anticipated halo car yet again. After previously targeting an April Fools’ Day reveal for the next-generation Roadster, CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the event is being pushed back slightly.
On the same day that marked the anniversary of the original Roadster’s 2008 production launch, Musk took to X to clarify the new schedule. Responding to a post about the car's history, Musk noted that Telsa will unveil the new Roadster “probably in late April." In a separate follow-up, he added that the reveal "will be a banger next-level."
Roadster 2.0: Lofty Promises and Banned Tech
The next-gen Roadster has been the subject of some of the most extreme performance claims in automotive history. Tesla has long promised a sub-2-second 0–60 mph time, a feat that would make it the quickest production car on the planet. To achieve this, the company is reportedly looking beyond traditional tire grip.
Tesla recently patented an aerodynamic system based on "fan car" technology — a principle so effective at generating downforce that it was famously banned from Formula 1 for giving cars an unfair advantage. By using fans to literally suck the car to the pavement, the Roadster could theoretically achieve acceleration speeds that physics would normally prohibit. Musk has also claimed the upcoming demo of the car will be "unforgettable."
Clues From Recent Patents
While the launch date has been a moving target, Tesla has been busy laying the legal groundwork for the reveal. Last month, the company filed two new trademarks specifically for the Roadster, a move that usually happens when a product is nearly ready for the public eye.
We have also seen glimpses of the interior through recent patent filings. One notable design is a monolithic, one-piece seat that appears to be optimized for the high G-forces the car will generate. These “megacasted” seats would be necessary to keep passengers from sliding around during that sub-2-second sprint.
When Will Tesla Unveil the New Roadster?
Tesla was originally aiming to reveal the new Roadster in 2025, and when that didn’t seem possible, the showcase was delayed to April 1st, 2026. That’s no longer happening, either, with Tesla now kicking the can further down the road. The timing of this announcement is poetic, as it coincided with the 18th anniversary of the first Roadster. While fans may be disappointed that the April 1st date was missed, a "late April" reveal isn’t that much of a delay — let’s just see if Tesla can keep it this time.
Tesla needs this win. As the company focuses more on mass-market vehicles like the upcoming Cybercab, the Roadster serves as a reminder of Tesla's ability to push the absolute limits of engineering. If Musk can actually deliver on the "banger" he’s promised, the wait will likely be forgotten the moment the tires hit the pavement.
