Tesla is making it easier than ever for owners to share exactly what their car was doing during a drive. In the latest update to the Tesla mobile app, the company has finally enabled a feature that overlays real-time telemetry data directly onto Dashcam clips saved to your phone.
The change means owners no longer have to resort to screen-recording their app just to show off how FSD handled a specific turn. The official release notes for version 4.55.6 state: "Clips downloaded to your phone now include details such as speed, steering wheel angle, and Self-Driving state."
Bridging the Forensic Data Gap
Tesla first introduced this telemetry overlay as part of its 2025 Holiday Update last December. At the time, it allowed you to see the vehicle’s speed, selected gear, steering wheel angle, and pedal pressure while watching clips in the car or through the live viewer in the mobile app. However, if you actually hit the "save" button to export that clip to your phone’s camera roll, all that data would disappear, leaving just the raw video.
This new update fixes that limitation. Now, when you download a clip, all that granular telemetry data is burned into the footage. This is a game-changer for transparency on social media, as it removes any guesswork about whether a car was using FSD during an incident or exactly how much pressure the driver was applying to the brakes.
Accessing the Vehicle "Black Box"
While the on-screen overlay is great for quick viewing, Tesla has also provided power users with even more advanced forensic tools. Late last year, the company launched its first-party Dashcam Explorer, which allows owners to extract raw data from their saved Dashcam clips.
With these tools, owners effectively have the keys to their own "black box." You can visualize everything from the exact accelerator pedal position (on a scale of 0 to 1) to the precise degree of the steering wheel. This standardized, open-source method to decode data ensures that owners have an undeniable record of the vehicle's state in the event of an insurance claim or a technical dispute.
Syncing with the Spring Update
This mobile app update is launching alongside Tesla's massive Spring 2026 Software Update for vehicles. The in-car update improves the Dashcam experience even further by increasing the buffer for saving clips from just one hour to a full 24 hours.
The mobile app also gains a few other perks mentioned in the release notes: "Save your sketches to access them in the Mobile App and share." This refers to the improved Sketchpad in the car, which now supports stickers and emojis. Between the zoom and pan features added earlier this year and this new telemetry export, Tesla’s Dashcam system is now arguably the most sophisticated security suite in the automotive world.
