Tesla is making the back seat a lot less boring for passengers. As part of its massive Spring 2026 Software Update, the automaker is finally giving rear-seat occupants their own interactive navigation experience. The feature, which first started rolling out this week as part of software version 2026.14 (and later), gives rear passengers a better look at the current navigation route.

The new functionality was showcased by Tesla owner @sergiumogan on X, who shared a video of the interface in action. The implementation bears a striking resemblance to the specialized Robotaxi UI that Tesla has been testing for its autonomous network, where riders need to stay informed without having access to the vehicle’s main screen up front.

A New Level of Passenger Independence
There’s a new Maps app icon located in the dock on the rear screen. Once tapped, it opens a dedicated map view that allows passengers to track exactly where they are and where they are headed. This is a huge quality-of-life improvement for families; kids in the back can now answer the "are we there yet?" question for themselves by checking their own arrival time and distance.
Crucially, this new view does not interfere with the navigation map on the front screen. While the driver stays focused on turn-by-turn directions, rear passengers can freely swipe to move the map around or pinch with two fingers to zoom in and out. It gives those in the back a sense of freedom to explore the surrounding area without annoying the person behind the wheel.
Simplified Functionality for the Back Seat
While the rear screen map is interactive, it doesn't have the full functionality of the front-seat app. To keep things simple and safe, the rear display only shows the navigation route for the very next destination or waypoint. If you have a long road trip with multiple stops, the rear screen won't show the grayed-out path for the entire journey, as the front screen does. It also doesn’t let you view pins on the map, destination information, or even a full-screen map.
It is currently limited to seeing the immediate path, checking the arrival time, and exploring the map via touch. You cannot add new stops or change the destination from the back; it’s simply a way to see your arrival time in a larger format and how far you are from your destination on the map.
