CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, has officially unveiled its 3rd-generation Shenxing Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery during its Super Tech Day 2026 event in Beijing. The latest iteration of the Shenxing architecture promises to completely redefine electric vehicle charging speeds, boasting unprecedented metrics that aim to make charging an EV as fast as pumping gas, all without sacrificing long-term battery health.
Record-Breaking Charging Speeds
The headline feature of the new Shenxing battery is its sheer charging velocity. According to CATL, the new pack can charge from 10% to 35% in just one minute. A charge from 10% to 80% takes a blistering 3 minutes and 44 seconds, while reaching a 90% state of charge takes only 6.5 minutes.
These figures are a massive improvement for LFP chemistry, which has traditionally been favored for its lower cost rather than top-tier performance.
Conquering the Cold
One of the most persistent complaints regarding electric vehicles is the severe degradation of charging performance in freezing temperatures. CATL has directly addressed this pain point with its new self-heating pulse technology.
By applying oscillating currents at specific frequencies, the battery is able to rapidly heat itself from the inside out without relying on inefficient external heaters or specialized charging stations. The results are staggering. Even in extreme cold, down to -30°C (-20°F), CATL claims the new Shenxing battery can recharge from 20% to 98% in as little as 9 minutes.
This technique is quite similar to the Supercharger ripple heating system that Tesla implemented early last year to rapidly warm up LFP batteries at any Supercharger site - but with much improved charging speeds.
Tesla’s Use of CATL Batteries
CATL supplies Tesla (among other manufacturers) with LFP batteries, which Tesla uses for its lower-performance models (Standard) built at Giga Shanghai. These vehicles are shipped to various regions around the world, including Europe, the Asia-Pacific market, and sometimes Canada, among other countries.
Engineered for Longevity
A common concern in the EV industry is that ultra-fast charging inherently degrades battery lifespan by generating excessive heat. CATL Chief Technology Officer Gao Huan emphasized that the company engineered the Shenxing 3 to decouple speed from degradation by focusing heavily on internal resistance and thermal management.
The new battery features a world-record internal resistance of just 0.25 milliohms, which is roughly 50% lower than the industry average. By reducing resistance, the battery generates significantly less heat during a supercharging session. Furthermore, CATL introduced a new Cell Shoulder Cooling Technology that targets the hottest zones of the cell directly, improving overall cooling efficiency by 20%.
Thanks to these hardware innovations and precise temperature monitoring, the new LFP battery is designed to retain over 90% of its original health even after enduring 1,000 ultra-fast charging cycles.
"We always deliver what we promise," Gao Huan told reporters at the Beijing event. As automakers continue the push for mass EV adoption, CATL's latest breakthrough proves that affordable LFP batteries can now directly compete with, and in many ways surpass, the charging convenience of internal combustion engines.
Now, we need to hope that Tesla either adopts this new battery through its supply agreement with CATL or develops its own similarly fast-charging batteries.
