The North American Tesla community is buzzing after what appears to be the first-ever sighting of a Model Y L test mule on U.S. soil. Long a forbidden fruit for domestic buyers, the stretched, six-seat version of Tesla’s best-selling SUV was spotted cruising on northbound Interstate 280 in California, covered in black camouflage wrap typically used for vehicles undergoing final validation testing.
The discovery was shared on X by Michael Carroll (@michaelrcarroll), who managed to capture an image of the vehicle undergoing testing. This public road sighting follows a previous report of the vehicle being seen behind the gates of Gigafactory Texas, adding serious weight to the theory that a North American launch is finally imminent.
The Stretched Family Hauler
The Model Y L first debuted in China last summer, where it quickly became a favorite for families who had outgrown the standard five-seat configuration. Unlike the somewhat cramped seven-seat option available in the current U.S. Model Y, the "L" version features a true 2-2-2 layout across three rows. This is made possible by a 150mm (5.9-inch) longer wheelbase and a total body length that is roughly 7 inches longer than the standard model.
Beyond the extra room, the Model Y L is marketed as a more premium experience. It features a larger 16-inch central touchscreen, adjustable second-row captain's chairs, and a suspension specifically tuned for comfort rather than sporty handling. Since its initial launch, the vehicle has successfully expanded into Australia, New Zealand, and several Asian markets, even receiving EU type approval late last year, but continues to elude North American buyers.
Filling the Model X Void
The timing of this sighting is critical for Tesla’s lineup. Now that the company has officially discontinued the Model S and Model X, there is a significant gap in the roster for customers who need a high-capacity, premium SUV. While the Model X was the roomiest offering, its departure leaves the Model Y L as the logical successor for families who require three rows of seating and a more luxurious cabin.
Elon Musk has previously teased a new, larger model that he claims is "way cooler than a minivan," but that project is likely further down the road. In the immediate term, bringing the Model Y L to North America allows Tesla to retain customers who might otherwise look toward electric alternatives from Kia or Hyundai that offer more interior volume.
Late 2026 or Sooner?
While Musk previously stated that the Model Y L wouldn't arrive in the U.S. until late 2026, if ever, this new road testing suggests the timeline may have been pulled forward. Tesla often uses public validation to ensure a vehicle’s software and hardware are ready for local road conditions and regulations.
If the Model Y L follows the pattern of previous launches, we could see an official announcement by the end of the year. For North American families tired of squeezing into the standard Y, the sight of a "long boi" on I-280 is the best news they’ve had in months.
