Tesla is tweaking the incentives for its most vocal supporters across the Atlantic. In a move designed to spur sales and reward brand advocates, the company has officially doubled the rewards for its referral program in Europe. The update specifically targets the Model 3 and Model Y, which remain the core of Tesla's high-volume strategy in the region.
As spotted by X user @EFIEBER_ANDRE, Tesla has increased its referral program rewards in Germany from 1,000 kilometers of free Supercharging to 2,000. This boost is being applied across Europe, effectively offering both the buyer and the referrer 2,000 km (roughly 1,300 miles) of free Supercharging.
A Tale of Two Regions
The way Tesla handles referrals varies significantly depending on where you are in the world. In the U.S., Tesla has been phasing out direct cash discounts in favor of value-added perks. For example, buyers in North America often receive three free months of Full Self-Driving (FSD), while referrers earn Tesla Credits that can be used for Supercharging or put toward vehicle and solar purchases.
In contrast, the European program remains focused on the "free fuel" aspect of Supercharging kilometers. While the U.S. program was recently tightened to improve margins — slashing loyalty discounts and Cybertruck perks — the European expansion suggests an ambition to cement market share. This aggressive push comes as Tesla aims to increase production by 20% at Gigafactory Berlin and hire an additional 1,000 workers to meet rising demand.
Is FSD the Next Reward for Europe?
Tesla’s referral programs have a history of being "on-again, off-again," as the company constantly iterates to find what drives the most volume. With the Netherlands recently becoming the first EU country to approve FSD (Supervised) for public use, the landscape in Europe is shifting rapidly.
As Tesla leadership has hinted, Dutch approval could lead to a domino effect across the continent. Once FSD achieves broader availability and regional approval in Europe, it would not be surprising to see Tesla swap out the Supercharging perk for free months of FSD, mirroring the U.S. strategy. This would not only lower the overhead cost of referrals for Tesla but also act as a powerful marketing tool to get more people hooked on its advanced driver-assistance software as it finds its footing in a massive market.
The Constant Evolution of Perks
Over the years, we’ve seen Tesla’s referral program award everything from free Roadsters to simple $500 credits. The company’s strategy is never static; they have completely stopped the program before, only to bring it back with even better incentives. This current doubling of kilometers is likely another temporary lever to pull while the company monitors how it impacts the bottom line.
If you've been on the fence about ordering a Model 3 or Model Y in Europe, now is probably the best time to grab a referral link. As we’ve seen in the U.S., these high-value rewards can disappear just as quickly as they arrived.
