Tesla is finding new ways to make owning an electric vehicle even more affordable by giving its home charging hardware some serious intelligence. We recently spotted an upcoming feature in version 4.56.5 of the Tesla app that reveals the company is preparing to launch a new "Low Cost Charging" configuration for the Wall Connector. This smart charging capability aims to maximize your savings by optimizing your charging schedule based on your local utility rates.
Automating Your Savings with Low Cost Charging
The core of this new feature is simplicity. Most utility providers offer various rate plans where electricity is significantly cheaper at night or during off-peak hours. Once you configure your specific utility and rate plan in the Tesla app, the system will automatically "Configure your charging preferences to optimize for the lowest cost energy based on your utility plan."
Tesla notes that this will be limited to "supported" Wall Connectors. While they haven't released a specific list yet, it is highly likely to include all Wi-Fi-connected Wall Connectors currently in the wild. This software-based approach essentially turns your Wall Connector into a smart appliance that knows exactly when to draw power to save you the most money. For those currently on a flat-rate plan, this might be the perfect excuse to look into a time-of-use plan to take full advantage of those overnight discounts.
Enhanced Charge on Solar
Tesla is also taking things a step further for homeowners with Powerwall and solar setups by introducing "Enhanced Charge on Solar." This feature combines the existing ability to use excess sun power with the new low-cost logic. According to the app strings we discovered, "The Low Cost Charging mode uses your utility rate plan and excess solar to save you money."
Essentially, the car will prioritize charging from your roof when the sun is out and then switch to the cheapest grid power available at night to top off. It's a cohesive way to manage home energy, with another reference in the latest app build noting, "Your Powerwall's Operational Mode controls how your home energy system functions. This includes smart vehicle charging features."
Expanding Wall Connector Utility
These updates build on an already solid foundation for Tesla’s flagship home charging solution. Currently, Wall Connectors already offer high-end features like access control, which lets you limit charging to specific vehicles via a VIN allow list or by brand (Tesla only or everyone). They also support independent schedules that are separate from the ones set inside the vehicle or the main app menu.
Version 4.56.5 of the Tesla app is a busy one, as it also introduces new repair certificates for high-voltage batteries and assets for the upcoming Model S and X Signature Edition. Seeing "Low Cost Charging" buried in the code suggests that Tesla is preparing for a public rollout very soon.
