Tesla is rolling out a new initiative to ensure its Supercharger network remains a good neighbor. According to recent sightings and a new notification in the vehicle, Tesla has begun implementing designated "Quiet Charging Zones" at specific Superchargers near residential zones.
By combining physical signage with an in-vehicle prompt, Tesla is working to reduce the noise at these locations after receiving some complaints.
Physical Signage in Residential Areas
As the Supercharger network grows, some new stations are being installed closer to homes and apartment complexes. While this is convenient for consumers nearby, especially those in apartments who rely solely on Supercharging, it can also increase noise levels.
To mitigate noise complaints from late-night charging sessions, Tesla has begun deploying physical sandwich-board signs at select locations.
Spotted recently at a Supercharger site in Los Angeles, the red-and-white signs prominently display the Tesla logo above the phrase "Quiet Charging Zone: Please respect your neighbors."
While the LA site is currently the only confirmed location with this physical signage, Tesla is likely using it as a pilot before rolling it out to other residential charging sites across its network.
Smart In-Vehicle Prompts
In classic Tesla fashion, the company is not relying on physical signs alone to get the message across. When a driver is charging at a Supercharger with a Quiet Charging Zone designation and their media volume is turned up, the vehicle's infotainment screen will display a notification reminding them to lower their volume.
A pop-up message appears over the media player reading: "Could you turn the volume down? Please be mindful of our neighbors."
To simplify compliance, the prompt includes a single "Lower" button that automatically reduces the audio to an acceptable level.
Playing Nice
This approach highlights Tesla's vertical integration and software. While third-party chargers could struggle to enforce the rules, Tesla can make compliance much easier and even enforce lower audio volumes while charging if needed.
As Tesla pushes to build out the Supercharger network even further, it is inevitable that some sites will be located in denser residential zones.
That means maintaining positive relationships with local municipalities and residents is critical to ensure that new sites are approved and aren’t targeted by misguided vandalism.
