The panoramic glass roof has been a defining feature across Tesla’s lineup since the early days of the Model S. Today, the only exceptions are the Model Y Standard and Cybercab. While the overhead glass creates an airy, minimalist cabin experience, it has often been a thermal management challenge for owners in intense summer climates. Tesla has even published a patent that could one day leverage the glass roof to help cool the cabin.

To date, solving cabin heat intrusion meant turning to third-party aftermarket clip-in screens.

However, Tesla has now officially listed a premium, factory-integrated manual retractable sunshade for the Model Y on the Tesla China Shop, with sales scheduled to begin on June 4, 2026. The accessory is priced at 1,499 RMB (~$220 USD) in China.

Seamless Integration

What fundamentally separates this official accessory from the sea of aftermarket alternatives is its aesthetic and mechanical integration. Rather than using a folding mesh frame that must be manually unclipped and stored in the trunk when not in use, Tesla's solution relies on a permanent, low-noise reel-type roller-blind mechanism.

The sunshade maintains the cabin's minimalist appearance while allowing owners to keep the sun out on hot days. The sunshade features a metallic-textured grab handle and is constructed using the same headliner fabric found in the vehicle, giving it a perfect finish.

Compatible Vehicles

While this sunshade is only available in China at the moment, it’s not exclusive to the Model Y L or the redesigned Model Y. It’s available for all 2020+ Model Ys, including the redesigned version in 2025.

To place an order for the sunshade, you must sign in to the Tesla store when the product goes live on June 4th. Tesla uses this process to offer you the correct sunshade for your vehicle.

Side-Airbag Compatible

Crucially, Tesla has addressed the primary safety hazard associated with third-party roof frames: side-curtain airbag interference. The shop listing notes that this retractable shade has undergone comprehensive vehicle airbag point-explosion testing and real-world road validation.

This certification ensures that the shade's structural frame will not impede occupant safety systems during a severe side-impact collision.

Professional or DIY Installation

Due to the physical dimensions and structural nature of the integrated frame, Tesla notes that installation requires a minimum of two people. While you can tackle this as a DIY project, Tesla is also offering professional installation.

For those uncomfortable with dismantling interior trim clips, Tesla recommends scheduling an appointment with a local Service Center once you’ve received the product. However, installation of the device is not included and will incur an additional fee for owners who choose to go that route.

Other Markets

Initially launching exclusively in the Chinese market, this product addresses a vocal consumer demand in a region known for extreme summer heat and an appetite for vehicle customization.

This premium retractable shade will very likely be available in other regions in the coming weeks or months. We expect this to be an extremely popular product, and we may eventually see a version offered for the Model 3 as well.
