What to Expect from Tesla's FSD V14 Lite This Month

It’s finally June, and it's expected to be an exciting month for HW3 Tesla owners. Over the last several earnings calls and other major Tesla events, Elon Musk, Ashok Elluswamy, and other Tesla executives have repeatedly stated that FSD v14 lite would be released on legacy HW3 vehicles this month.

Tesla HW3 owners have been using FSD v12 since mid-2024 with no major updates. There were huge improvements and numerous features introduced in FSD v13 and v14 that aren’t available in FSD v12.6, which currently runs on HW3 cars.

The arrival of FSD v14 lite will bring a lot more than just smoother driving or better decision-making. It’ll also introduce major features such as the ability to reverse, shift gears, and park at the destination.

Let’s take a look at all the features that have been introduced since FSD v12.6 and are expected to be included in FSD v14 lite.

FSD v13 Features

FSD v13 was a major leap over v12 and introduced features that make FSD such a smooth experience, including point-to-point driving with “Start from Park” and “Autopark at Destination”.

These two features enable you to simply tap the big blue Start Self-Driving button on the screen, sit back, and supervise as your Tesla takes you to your destination. Once it arrives, it will seek and then park itself.

V13 also introduced the ability for FSD to reverse and shift between drive and reverse automatically, which was key to point-to-point autonomy, as FSD became capable of backing out of parking spots, garages, or making room to exit a parallel parking stall on a street by itself.

Both of these features are huge and will be included in FSD v14 lite.

Full-Resolution Video and Bigger Models

Two of the other key features in FSD v13 were full-resolution video for the higher-resolution AI4 cameras and larger models.

While HW3 owners will not be receiving the higher-resolution videos without future camera improvements, they will receive quantized and improved versions of the faster, smarter, and smoother models that make FSD v13 and v14 feel safer and more human-like

FSD v14 Features

FSD v14 was another step forward for autonomy and brought full end-to-end logic across the entire driving stack, including low-speed maneuvering in parking lots, garages, and other tight, enclosed areas.

It also brought major improvements in high-speed, reactive decision-making, enabling the current obstacle-avoidance behavior and some short-lived (but soon-to-return) pothole-avoidance behavior.

Speed Modes

Another major change v14 brought was improved speed handling. Gone was the maximum speed limit set by the driver, replaced entirely by the new speed profiles.

Tesla launched a large batch of profiles to suit users, ranging from Sloth, Chill, Standard, Hurry, and the infamous Mad Max:

Sloth: Model Y drives under the speed limit.

Chill: Model Y drives in slower lanes and makes minimal lane changes.

Standard: Model Y drives at normal speed and adjusts speed to match the flow of traffic.

Hurry: Model Y drives faster and makes more frequent lane changes.

Mad Max: Model Y drives more quickly than in the Hurry profile, with more frequent lane changes.

FSD App, Streaks, and More

FSD v14.3 recently began rolling out widely to customers with AI4 vehicles, introducing the new Self-Driving app and FSD streaks for distance and daily use. It also brought with it a spade of improvements for Actually Smart Summon, shifting it from the older v12 FSD stack to a more modern, faster, and responsive v14 stack.

While Tesla has stated the FSD v14 lite will receive the full set of features of FSD v14, this was before the Self-Driving app and streaks were introduced. While these are expected to be included as well, Tesla didn’t make it explicitly clear.

Lane Selection & Highway Dynamics

Some of the biggest and most noticeable improvements are in highway speed handling, vehicle follow distance, and overall highway dynamics.

On FSD v13 and especially on FSD v14, the neural networks are far faster to respond to things happening around the vehicle, making the entire experience much safer. That includes being able to safely shy away from vehicles intruding on your lane to dodging stray debris at highway speeds.

Tesla also made major improvements to lane selection, which means that, in general, FSD does not hog the left lane and prepares to take exits in advance, making the experience much smoother.

Emergency Vehicle Handling & Relaxed Monitoring

The final batch of improvements that really make a real difference for drivers is better handling for emergency vehicles, school buses, and speed zones. FSD v13 brought significant improvements on this front, including the ability to use the in-vehicle speakers to listen for approaching sirens.

Tesla further improved this with v14, bringing even better emergency vehicle handling, along with relaxed driver monitoring and additional safety features.

FSD v14 Lite Features

While FSD v14 lite will include support for Start FSD from Park, automatic parking at destination, emergency vehicle handling, traveling in reverse, automatically shifting between drive and reverse, and more, there will likely be some limitations as well due to the smaller AI model that will run on these vehicles.

After all, Tesla did recently admit that unsupervised FSD will not be achievable on HW3 vehicles, and that there will be a compute and camera upgrade.

The smaller model could affect reaction time, smoothness, or decision-making, but we’ll have to wait and see exactly how close FSD v14 lite is to its big brother when it’s finally released this month.

FSD v14 Internationally

With FSD v14-Lite to expand internationally, it will be a major update for the legacy HW3 fleet around the globe. This release will be even more important outside of North America, as FSD in approved regions has so far been limited to HW4 vehicles.

With the introduction of FSD v14 lite, Tesla is expected to make FSD available to HW3 vehicles in at least some regions.

FSD V15

The next iteration of FSD will be v15, which Tesla has stated will also run on HW4. However, this version of FSD is unlikely to ever make its way to the more limited HW3. FSD v15 will finally have the 10x parameter upgrade we’ve been waiting for.

It’s expected to be released at the end of 2026 at the earliest, though it will likely go into 2027. Tesla has stated that it will wait for FSD v15 before really launching Robotaxi at scale.

Release Date for FSD V14 Lite

While the North American rollout of FSD v14 lite is set for late June, Tesla noted in its post that it cannot provide definitive dates for international expansion at this time. 

Regional adaptation can be a complex engineering challenge, as we saw during the international rollout of FSD. Tesla needed to train FSD in each region, adapting to local situations. The system must be rigorously trained to recognize and respond to distinct road markings, unique traffic signs, and localized driving behaviors. Because the cameras differ between HW3 and HW4, these models will need to be retrained for HW3.

Securing regulatory approval in international markets can also be a hurdle; however, it will likely be much easier if the market has already approved FSD for HW4 vehicles. Regulators will simply have to feel that FSD on HW3 is on par with HW4.
