Tesla China has kicked off the summer season with a big spike in deliveries. According to the latest figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) reported by CnEVPost, Tesla China’s wholesale volume reached 85,982 vehicles in May (via @SawyerMerritt). This marks a 39.44% increase from last year and represents the highest monthly total so far this year.
These are wholesale numbers, including both local retail sales in China and units exported to other markets from Gigafactory Shanghai.
Regaining Upward Sales Momentum
The May data shows an 8.18% increase from April. This month-over-month bounce suggests that Tesla is regaining its growth trajectory after seeing a brief volume dip in April. Despite local demand cooling off a bit that month, Giga Shanghai set an overall record for April output after delivering 79,478 units. These May sales build on and outpace those results.
Looking at the bigger picture, Tesla China's total wholesale volume for the first five months of the year has reached 378,858 vehicles, a 29.36% increase over the same period last year.
This momentum in China is part of a broader sales turnaround for Tesla. May was also a strong period for the company across key European markets, where sales surged 655% year-over-year in France and saw healthy upticks in countries like Denmark, Spain, and Sweden.
Market Strategy and FSD Expansion
Tesla is deploying new purchasing incentives to keep demand high in the local market. During May, the company introduced a new “Easy Loan” vehicle financing structure in China to lower the entry barrier for buyers. For a base Rear-Wheel-Drive Model 3 priced at 235,500 yuan (~$35,000 USD), this program drops the required minimum down payment to 55,900 yuan (~$8,200 USD) for a five-year term.
At the same time, Tesla is laying the groundwork to bring its latest Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software to the country. It recently updated its Chinese owner’s manuals and website with references to features exclusive to FSD v14 and “Tesla Assisted Driving,” which appears to be the local name it will use for FSD.
A wider public rollout of FSD in China has long been in limbo, but it looks like the gears are finally starting to turn. Tesla recently started ramping up recruitment of local FSD testers to validate the software on Chinese roads, suggesting that a full public launch is getting closer as factory production numbers climb.
