The evolution of Tesla from a niche EV manufacturer in the United States to a global automaker, and now to an AI-first company, has required more than just setting up a few servers to support engineers. It has required building some of the most capital-intensive, sophisticated compute architectures on the planet.
Behind the deployment of these foundations for the neural networks that run FSD was Raj Jegannathan, Tesla’s long-standing Vice President of IT, AI Infrastructure, and Information Security.
Jegannathan began his departure in February of this year, but has now made it official via LinkedIn, and had some words of wisdom to conclude his 13-year tenure at Tesla, moving on to assume the role of Chief Technology Officer at Chronoscale, a cloud infrastructure provider.
Founding Autonomy
To understand the impact of Jegannathan’s departure, we have to look at some of the massive AI infrastructure that he was tasked with building. Reporting directly to Elon Musk, Jegannathan spent over a decade leading the teams that designed, built, and operated one of the world's largest GPU clusters.
This raw computational power is the literal engine driving Tesla’s end-to-end neural networks, providing the massive training capacity required to process billions of miles of real-world fleet telemetry for FSD.
Beyond the raw silicon of AI training clusters, his mandate included the architectural backbone of Tesla's global operations, including large-scale storage systems and global information security.
In his reflection posted on LinkedIn, Jegannathan noted that a comprehensive, end-to-end understanding of the business was essential to harness AI across both products and customer support channels.
Tesla’s Ongoing Leadership Changeover
The formalization of Jegannathan’s departure adds to a series of high-level executive exits that have occurred over the last six months. As Tesla shifts its corporate identity away from traditional automotive manufacturing and toward a robotics-first paradigm, several long-tenured executives have vested out, retired, or pursued other challenges.
