Tesla App Update Hints at Upcoming Home Heat Pump Control

Tesla is steadily transforming its mobile app into a complete home energy management hub. Over the last few years, it has added a variety of ecosystem features for solar and Powerwall users aimed at maximizing efficiency and lowering utility bills. The latest string of backend code hints that Tesla is preparing to expand this integration to residential heat pumps.

Expanding the Smart Home Ecosystem

According to the release notes for the latest Tesla mobile app update (version 4.57.5), new code strings point to what could be an upcoming menu item called Home Controls, likely in the Tesla Home section. The unreleased feature brings a bunch of new code lines and phrases to the Tesla app, including:

The update specifically introduces lines like energy_site_home_controls_heat_pump. Based on the text, Tesla will soon allow users to manage their home heat pumps directly from the vehicle app interface, adding another major appliance to Tesla's energy management ecosystem alongside existing charging and storage hardware. What’s more, some of these strings even mention a new Accessories screen, meaning the implementation could potentially reach beyond just heat pumps to ACs, pool systems, and other appliances.

This integration follows a pattern of expanding software capabilities for solar and Powerwall users. Tesla recently launched an AI-powered “System Status” feature for Powerwalls in the app, giving homeowners more in-depth insight into their real-time power production and usage.

Managing Surplus Solar Energy

The text strings outline how this heat pump management will operate. One of the primary features will mirror the existing Drive on Sunshine functionality. For context, the Drive on Sunshine feature charges your Tesla with excess solar energy once your Powerwall is topped off. This keeps users from selling power back to the electrical grid at low wholesale rates only to buy it back at a premium later when they need to plug in.

It looks like the heat pump integration will apply this logic to home climate control. The system will feature an automated toggle (in the app as energy_site_home_controls_heat_pump_description_boosted) accompanied by the message: "Powerwall is encouraging your heat pump to use surplus electricity.”

When clean energy is abundant, the app will run the heat pump to pre-condition the home past typical limits. When operations return to normal, the Tesla app will set your heat pump back to its standard temperature settings.

Extending Powerwall Backup

Beyond managing daily solar generation, this integration could prove particularly valuable during grid failures. Tesla could automatically turn your heat pump off during an outage, extending home backup when you need it most.

The heat pump controls also build on older app references that revealed Tesla is working on smart breaker integration, which would automatically open circuit breakers during a blackout. This would give owners the ability to cut power to high-energy, non-essential systems like swimming pools, air conditioners, and large electric heaters when the power’s out, preserving Powerwall capacity and keeping essential home devices or refrigerators running for a much longer period.

As Tesla moves closer to finalizing these smart home interfaces, the mobile app is evolving from a basic car companion into an intelligent grid manager. While there’s no release date for these heat pump options just yet, their presence in the current app build suggests they could be coming soon.
