Tesla appears to want to scale Cybercab production and deployment quickly, rather than simply testing production lines in low volume while developing next-generation self-driving hardware. New drone footage from Gigafactory Texas shows the dedicated robotaxi vehicle fleet building up staggering numbers, just waiting to be deployed.
An X post from @AirwaveDynamics revealed more than 100 Tesla Cybercabs sitting in the Giga Texas outbound lot. The aerial imagery captures the biggest fleet ever seen of the gold-colored vehicles parked tightly together on the factory grounds. Dozens of units are lined up row by row, ahead of deployment for road testing (and maybe more?).

Mass Production is Ramping Fast
This sighting comes just weeks after Tesla officially kicked off mass production of the Cybercab at Giga Texas in late April. Cybercab road testing is already underway on public streets, and we recently even got a look at the vehicles driving themselves off the assembly line.
Interestingly, in addition to the 100+ Cybercabs seen at Giga Texas, a second massive cluster was discovered at a staging lot further north at the same time. X user @scotsrule08 posted a video showing a pretty big Cybercab nest consisting of more than 50 units at a regional staging ground in Dallas (via @SawyerMerritt).

The choice of location makes perfect sense. Tesla expanded its unsupervised Robotaxi service to Dallas and Houston in April, offering rides with no safety drivers (or even monitors) on board. Bringing the Cybercab to Dallas in such strong numbers suggests an active fleet deployment could happen soon.
The Hardware and Regulatory Strategy
While steering wheel-less Cybercabs are rolling off the line, Giga Texas is actually outputting a mix. We have seen both steering wheel-less Cybercabs and units with steering wheels coming out of the factory. Tesla recently self-certified its Robotaxi vehicles as SAE Level 4-compliant under a new Texas law, but federal regulations for manual control-less deployment are still a hurdle. To bypass red tape, Tesla has been open to shipping the Cybercab with steering wheels and pedals if required by law. Itβs possible Tesla is building them to be easily removable later.
Tesla leadership previously said they would wait for FSD v15, which is expected later this year or early next year with a major 10x parameter upgrade, before attempting any large-scale Robotaxi expansions.
They also announced a mid-cycle "HW 4.1" or "HW4+" FSD computer featuring 32GB of RAM per chip (so 64GB in total, since each computer will have two chips, like the current AI4 hardware). HW4+ will also bring a 10% increase in raw compute power and memory bandwidth compared to current-gen FSD computers, with production expected to kick off sometime in the middle of next year. That's around the same time that the next-generation AI5 chip will enter mass production, but Elon Musk has previously said that AI5 will make its way to Tesla's supercomputers and Optimus robots before consumer vehicles.
We originally suspected Tesla was waiting for FSD v15 or a new self-driving computer to start deploying Cybercabs for public Robotaxi rides. However, with over 150 vehicles already sitting in Texas lots, itβs possible Cybercabs could start rolling out much sooner. Tesla could also be designing initial Cybercab production to be fully upgradeable to the HW4+ (or AI5) platform when it comes out.
