Tesla Crashes Into Texas Home, Driver Blames Autopilot [VIDEO] [TESLA RESPONDS]

A tragic accident in Katy, Texas, has left a family grieving after a Tesla Model 3 crashed into a suburban home on the evening of Friday, June 19. While authorities are actively working to piece together the events that led to the collision, the driver has reportedly claimed that an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) was active during the incident.

Update (6/22): Tesla has officially confirmed that the Model 3 was NOT using Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (Supervised) at the time of the crash. The driver took over control from FSD and stepped on the accelerator, striking the residence at 73 mph.

Tragic Suburban Collision

The vehicle crashed into the front room of the home, hitting 76-year-old Martha Avila Mantilla. According to her daughter, Jennifer Barbour, the impact left her mother pinned against the wall by a refrigerator that was shoved across the living room. Avila was rushed to a local hospital but sadly died of her injuries.

Deputies from Harris County Constable Precinct 5 noted that the 44-year-old driver showed no signs of intoxication and has been cooperating with the investigation. The driver told responding deputies the vehicle had Autopilot engaged.

Neighbor security camera footage obtained by CNN shows the vehicle traveling at an incredibly high speed on the neighborhood street right before the impact. These extreme residential speeds are uncharacteristic of how both Autopilot and Tesla’s more premium Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature behaves in neighborhood settings.

Autopilot includes Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC), which adjusts vehicle speed to keep up with surrounding traffic, and Autosteer, which helps keep your vehicle centered in its lane. Meanwhile, FSD can autonomously navigate highways and even city streets, but under constant driver supervision.

Examining the Data and Safety Records

Right now, authorities have not yet confirmed whether Autopilot was active at the time of the crash. Tesla explicitly informs users that its assistance features are supervised, meaning drivers must remain fully attentive at all times, even with newer FSD versions that allow for hands-free driving.

Tesla has even been forced to change its driver assistance branding over time to reinforce this point. The original Autopilot naming landed the manufacturer in hot water with regulators previously, leading to software updates where Tesla axed the Autopilot name.

In North America, Tesla has also removed Basic Autopilot, which used to be included with every vehicle. Now, owners are forced to either use nothing or buy FSD.

Historically, Tesla’s self-driving software has scored well in official evaluations. The Model Y recently became the first vehicle to pass NHTSA's brand-new safety tests for advanced driver assistance systems. Furthermore, real-world data shows that FSD can actively protect drivers, often being praised for predicting and preventing crashes before they can occur.

Tesla claims that FSD goes roughly 5.5 million miles before a major collision, making it up to seven times safer than the U.S. average of 660,000 miles per collision for human drivers. However, these safety claims have recently been targeted by two U.S. senators, who are urging NHTSA to investigate them and increase federal oversight on autonomous driving systems.

Tesla's internal vehicle logs accurately record every single steering, braking, and throttle input, alongside whether or not features like Autopilot or FSD are engaged at any given time. While Tesla has yet to provide the official telemetry for this specific incident, they routinely share these logs with crash investigators to clear up exactly what happened.
