Recapping Year One of Tesla's Robotaxi Service

One year ago today, on June 22, 2025, a small fleet of specially-equipped Model Y crossovers began picking up passengers in Austin, Texas. It was the quiet birth of an autonomous ride-hailing network that many critics thought was years away from reality. Twelve months later, that limited beta test has evolved into a rapidly expanding commercial network that is steadily removing human supervision from the driver’s seat.

The Early Summer Pilot and Mobile App

When the service first opened its doors in Austin last summer, it operated under a very strict invite-only protocol. Unless you received a direct golden ticket, you couldn’t even download the Robotaxi app to summon a car. Tesla slowly began to scale the platform by sending out more invites to the local public, gathering critical early validation data from everyday commuters.

During these initial weeks, the system relied heavily on user feedback to iron out early glitches. Engineers rapidly iterated on the app’s user interface and functionality, quickly rolling out updates that integrated features like walking directions and mid-trip destination editing.

Pricing during the first month was famously experimental. Rides launched at a flat promotional rate of just $4.20 per trip, regardless of the distance traveled. By mid-July, the flat rate jumped to an equally meme-themed $6.90 fee, before transitioning entirely to a dynamic pricing model by the end of July. Despite the structural shifts, the cost per mile has remained much lower than that of traditional ride-hailing alternatives.

Coastal Expansion and Going Public on iOS

With the Austin testbed showing promising results, the network made its first major geographic leap on August 1, 2025. The rollout landed Robotaxi in the Bay Area, though it arrived with a much higher fare structure and strict human supervision in the form of safety drivers behind the wheel, albeit hands-off.

September brought two massive structural milestones. First, the software stack moved beyond basic city streets, with commercial Robotaxi vehicles finally gaining access to Austin highways for the first time. Alongside this highway expansion, Tesla dropped the official Robotaxi app on the iOS App Store, introducing a public waitlist for users wanting to try out the service.

Dropping Safety Drivers

The biggest conceptual shift for the network arrived in early January 2026. After almost exactly six months of running trips with human safety monitors sitting in the passenger seat upfront, Tesla began limited deployment of its first uncrewed rides in Austin. Passengers could finally ride completely alone, with the vehicle relying entirely on its cameras and onboard computer to navigate city traffic.

As the driverless service matured, the pricing structure moved away from fluctuating estimates to a traditional commercial model. The most recent price increases hit the network earlier this spring, eventually settling into a standard $3.00 base fare paired with a flat $1.40 per mile rate.

With the driverless model proven out in Austin, April 2026 saw an aggressive expansion into new territory. Tesla launched a fully unsupervised service in Dallas and Houston, bypassing the safety-driver phase entirely to offer pure uncrewed rides from day one. Just days later, the dev team finally launched the Robotaxi app for Android, ending nearly a year of iOS exclusivity.

Confidence in the underlying Full Self-Driving neural networks climbed even higher in May. The network officially started offering unsupervised night rides, testing the camera-based vision system against difficult low-light urban environments. This culminated earlier this month when the autonomous perimeter expanded to encompass the entire Austin geofence, making driverless pick-ups available across the entire Austin metro area.

Safety Records and the Cybercab Future

The safety data accumulated over this inaugural year paints an impressive picture. Federal safety filings show no major accidents involving Tesla Robotaxi vehicles over the last twelve months. In the rare instances where a collision did occur, most involved a human-driven vehicle rear-ending the Robotaxi at a stoplight or intersection.

While modified Model Ys have carried the service through its first year, the long-term roadmap relies on dedicated hardware. Tesla’s purpose-built autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab, is already rolling out of assembly lines at Giga Texas. Public documents recently gave us a look at the Cybercab’s official specs, revealing a 617-pound maximum weight rating for its two-seat cabin configuration, among other things.

The next phase of Tesla’s Robotaxi expansion is currently bottlenecked by software rather than manufacturing. Tesla plans to wait for FSD v15, due to come out later this year or early next year, before kicking off large-scale rollouts across the U.S. Despite this, we’ve been seeing staging activities for Robotaxi operations in known expansion targets like Las Vegas and Arizona. If this first year of real-world operation in Texas is any indication, the transition from a novel pilot program to an everyday transit staple is moving faster than anyone anticipated.
