Buying American remains a huge priority for a lot of car shoppers, and the latest automotive manufacturing data shows that local production lines and supply chains are keeping Tesla well ahead of the competition. Cars.com has released its annual automotive manufacturing report, and the results show a familiar name standing at the top for yet another year.
Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Take Top Honors
This marks the sixth consecutive year that Tesla has claimed the title of most American-made vehicle. There is a slight shakeup at the very top of the podium compared to the previous study, though. Last year, the Model Y ranked first, and the Model 3 came in second place. For the 2026 model year, the Model 3 sedan has officially reclaimed the crown, securing the number one spot and pushing the Model Y back into second place.
The total number of dominant positions dropped slightly this year because of a recent lineup change. Back in 2024, Tesla took up an unprecedented five top spots on the longstanding index. However, the January announcement to discontinue the long-running Model S and Model X pulled both older premium vehicles from index eligibility entirely.
Calculating American-Made-ness
Now in its 21st year of publication, the Cars.com American-Made Index rates vehicles on a 100-point scale. The methodology uses five major criteria to grade domestic impact:
Final assembly location
Percentage of Made in U.S. and Made in Canada parts
Country of origin for the engine/drive unit
Country of origin for the transmission
Total size of the U.S. manufacturing workforce
Shifting Supply Chains and the Top 10
Out of 379 light-duty passenger vehicles analyzed for the 2026 model year, only 86 models qualified to make the final ranking. The top ten positions are heavily occupied by domestic utility vehicles and trucks, but Tesla’s localized parts sourcing allowed its mass-market vehicles to beat out legacy automakers.

The study highlights that many vehicles that remain on the list show a clear trend toward higher domestic parts content. For example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee climbed up 66 spots by boosting its local parts value by 14%. Legacy brands are clearly adjusting their supply chains to favor local manufacturing hubs.
Cars.com noted that even the imported or unranked models still provide a massive boost to the domestic economy through dealership operations, auto parts stores, and local mechanics. As Tesla continues to evolve production processes at Giga Texas and Fremont, not to mention ramping up Cybercab mass production, we expect vertical integration to keep giving local assembly lines a huge structural advantage.
