Tesla’s big rollout of the latest Full Self-Driving stack is finally landing in Australia and New Zealand, but one specific variant is getting (temporarily) left behind. While owners across Oceania are downloading FSD (Supervised) v14, drivers of the Model Y L are receiving unexpected update notices.
A Separate Validation Process
Tesla officially started rolling out FSD v14 to Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) vehicles in Australia and New Zealand last week. This came just under a year after the regional fleet first received FSD (Supervised), which initially deployed with the older v13 software branch.
However, owners of Tesla’s three-row, six-seat Model Y variant have been told to sit tight. As revealed in an official email notification shared on X by @nathanhome, the software will not be available on these models just yet. The official message explains: "The rollout of FSD (Supervised) v14 has commenced in Australia and New Zealand. As the first market to introduce FSD v14 to Model Y L, additional refinement and real-world data is required for this model before activation can be extended more broadly."
Why the Six-Seater is Different
The Model Y L requires its own isolated software validation due to its unique physical footprint. Tesla launched the Model Y L in China last summer before eventually bringing it to Australia and New Zealand earlier this spring. As a family-focused vehicle, it sports a 150mm longer wheelbase and is overall 179mm longer than a standard Model Y, resulting in a true 2-2-2 cabin layout with adjustable, heated, and ventilated second-row captain's chairs, a larger 16-inch screen, and a comfort-oriented suspension.
Because of these structural and weight differences, FSD (Supervised) requires individual validation for this model, even though it features the same HW4 computer and sensor package. Interestingly, both the Model Y L and FSD v14 are already available in South Korea, but the email to Oceanic customers confirms that Australia and New Zealand will be the first to actually pair the two together.
Impact on Future Launches
The engineering work happening down under right now should pay major dividends for other regions down the road. With our sources recently confirming that the Model Y L is coming to the North American market this fall, validating FSD v14 internationally right now could drastically cut down the software wait times for American buyers when the family haulers arrive stateside.
For now, local owners will have to monitor their mobile apps for a software update notification. While Tesla didn’t share a confirmed release date for FSD v14 on the Model Y L in the message, it told owners: "Our team is actively working on development and you will be notified as soon as the update is ready to install on your vehicle."
Meanwhile, older Hardware 3 vehicles are also on their own path. Engineers are separately testing a condensed and optimized FSD v14 Lite build for older computer and sensor packages, which will eventually expand internationally to HW3 owners.
