Tesla’s Cybertruck has officially been named the safest pickup truck on the market for 2026 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The safety group recently updated its ratings for the 2026 Cybertruck, awarding it the highest "Top Safety Pick+" honor in a major win for Tesla’s engineering team.
The IIHS’s latest safety data serves to silence years of criticism from skeptics. When Tesla first unveiled its all-electric truck, critics tore into its unorthodox, angular stainless-steel exoskeleton, saying it could turn into a dangerous deathtrap for passengers and pedestrians alike during an impact. However, real-world crash testing proves that the Cybertruck’s unique geometry and structural design make for a safer vehicle than anything else in the segment.
Top Safety Pick+
To qualify for the Top Safety Pick+ distinction, which represents the highest accolade the IIHS has to offer, a vehicle must achieve top scores across an expansive list of tests. The Cybertruck managed to secure a "Good" overall rating, the maximum score possible, across almost the entire core testing loop:

Notably, the Cybertruck also showcased elite software performance during active collision avoidance checks, avoiding every single pedestrian impact in field trials, including a crossing child during the day, a crossing adult at night, and a parallel adult at night.
This stellar safety record in crash testing is a repeating trend. The truck previously earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS last year. Other consumer models in Tesla’s lineup share a similar history, with both the Model Y and the Model 3 receiving top safety honors regularly.

According to the IIHS, the small overlap front evaluation consists of a driver-side and a passenger-side component. If the results of the two evaluations differ, then the lower rating of the two becomes the overall small overlap rating.

The “Front crash prevention: vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0” test category is new to this year’s safety ratings and applies to all 2026 model year Cybertrucks. The IIHS said it was evaluated with standard Collision Avoidance Assist engaged. Across the full battery of tests, the Cybertruck only received three "Acceptable" ratings and a single "Marginal" rating, its worst result, for child seat anchors.
Beating the Competition
When comparing these crash results to the broader pickup market, Tesla finds itself standing completely alone. The Cybertruck earned the best safety rating of Top Safety Pick+, making it the only pickup truck to earn that award in the entire industry.

The stainless-steel truck easily beat out not just legacy gas trucks but its direct electric competitor, the Rivian R1T, which landed further down the list in sixth place.
Understanding the Production Cutoff
The IIHS noted that the top rating applies to 2025-26 models built after April 2025 (the “Front crash prevention: vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0” results, however, only apply to 2026 Cybertrucks). Beginning with 2025 models built after April 2025, changes were made to the front underbody structure and footwell to improve occupant safety in driver-side small overlap front crashes.
This previously raised questions about the crash safety of Cybertrucks built before that cutoff. Wes Morrill, Tesla’s Lead Engineer for the Cybertruck, explained the situation on social media last year to put minds at ease. He explained that the date restriction is due to a minor manufacturing change involving the front casting, which was optimized for manufacturability in April 2025.
While the formal IIHS ratings technically do not cover trucks built before April 2025, Morrill confirmed that Tesla’s internal testing shows no difference in crash results between the two versions. Owners can check when their Cybertruck was manufactured on the certification label that can be found on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.
