The Model Y is widely known for its practical cabin layout, giving owners an ample amount of cargo room to play with. However, because the vehicle’s trunk can be so massive, smaller items have a bad habit of sliding around wildly during acceleration or sharp turns. While owners previously had to rely on third-party aftermarket solutions to keep their gear secure in the trunk, a first-party solution has finally arrived.
Managing the Cargo Space
The official Tesla Shop has just launched the new Model Y Expandable Trunk Organizer, a $245 product that provides a place for everything. It helps you keep your trunk organized with four expandable bins and two mesh pockets.
Tesla’s entry-level Model Y boasts 29.5 cubic feet (835 liters) of trunk space under normal conditions, which expands to a massive 70.8 cubic feet (2004 liters) if you fold the second row flat. That’s plenty of room to throw in large suitcases, golf bags, or heavy gym bags. There’s no issue until you need to transport loose gear like groceries, food for a picnic, kids' sports equipment, or toys.
This first-party trunk organizer is built to drop right into the main trunk area behind the second-row seats when they are in their default upright position. The package includes 4 integrated, non-removable bins. The best part of the design is that each of the individual boxes can be folded completely flat independently when you don’t need them, allowing you to quickly free up floor space for larger items.
Sub-Trunk Organizer
At the same time, Tesla has also started selling a Sub-Trunk Organizer for the Model Y, priced at $115. This is designed to fit inside the hidden lower trunk well that’s located underneath the trunk’s floorboard and offers 2.1-2.9 cubic feet (59-82 liters) of storage capacity.
“Designed to fit securely in your sub-trunk, the Model Y Sub-Trunk Organizer helps keep your belongings organized and concealed. With two removable dividers, you can easily customize your storage,” the official product listing reads.
The accessory includes one bin and two removable dividers to section off the bin according to your needs, and it’s compatible with all Model Y vehicles produced in 2025 or later. The organizer makes it so much easier to store your mobile charging equipment and other gear in the sub-trunk and keep everything neatly tucked away.
Accessory Expansion in the Shop
Tesla has been steadily expanding its direct accessory catalog over the last few months. For example, the store recently started letting customers separately purchase the Cybertruck Off-Road Light Bar, which was originally only available with the limited Foundation Series Cyberbeast orders. The Tesla Shop has also launched a retractable sunshade for the Model Y’s glass roof on the Chinese store page for about $220 USD, prompting North American and European owners to wait eagerly for it to land on their shores.
There is one important compatibility warning to keep in mind before you purchase the new trunk organizer. The product listing explicitly notes that this organizer is not compatible with seven-seat Model Y configurations since they don’t have the same trunk space.
This layout restriction makes sense, but it will be interesting to watch how accessory compatibility changes as new model refreshes land. Our internal sources indicate that Tesla’s three-row, six-seat Model Y L is launching this fall in North America, targeting an August-September release window.
