Stealing an actual Tesla is pretty hard, what with GPS tracking and Sentry Mode, so thieves are going after the next best thing: truckloads of batteries straight from the source. Tesla has been hit by a string of sophisticated cargo thefts at Gigafactory Nevada, where an organized ring has been driving off with entire trailers filled with millions of dollars in product.
According to a new WIRED report, Storey County Sheriff’s records show that trailers containing Powerwall batteries have been stolen right off the factory's loading docks at least 11 times since last December. Storey County Sheriff’s Detective Sam Hatley described the situation bluntly, calling it "an epidemic." The thefts have become a major headache for Tesla's logistics managers, who are trying to plug security gaps that allowed scammers to walk right in.
How the Scams Are Happening
These aren't your typical smash-and-grab operations where someone cuts a lock at a truck stop. Instead, these are strategic thefts where organized groups exploit gaps in check-in protocols. Taking advantage of loose relationships between freight brokers and logistics carriers, thieves are using fake IDs, forged commercial driver's licenses, and social engineering to trick warehouse staff into handing over the cargo.
The first big heist happened last December, when a dodgy carrier made off with two trailers containing over $475,000 worth of Powerwall units. The trailers were later found empty 500 miles away in Southern California. January was even busier for the thieves, with Tesla reporting nine cargo thefts in that single month. In one instance, a freight broker accidentally awarded a transport contract to an illegitimate carrier, leading to the disappearance of 123 Powerwalls that were headed to a Tesla facility in Hayward, California.
Turning Stolen Powerwalls Into Expensive Bricks
The bulk of the stolen cargo consisted of Tesla's Powerwall residential battery system, which stores excess energy from solar and feeds it back to a home or the local grid. Because Tesla maintains total control over the Powerwall ecosystem, it can easily lock stolen units out of its network.
Investigators told WIRED that when a Powerwall is marked as stolen, it cannot be activated. If you can't activate it, you can't use it, so it essentially becomes an incredibly heavy paperweight. Unless these rings know how to override the software restrictions, they are stuck with dead weight that they can only sell for parts (battery cells, mainly) or try to dupe unsuspecting buyers into purchasing on platforms like Facebook Marketplace. Tesla's security team has already been looking for stolen Powerwalls online, finding several listed for sale and pointing law enforcement directly to the sellers.
Catching the Culprits and Upgrading Security
The sheriff's department eventually caught a break after placing a police GPS tracker on a stolen trailer that was left sitting at a nearby gas station. When the thieves came back to move it, police swooped in and arrested three suspects in their twenties who had traveled from California with a forged commercial driver's license.
An associate manager at Tesla's Nevada facility admitted to investigators that the early thefts happened because staff failed to follow basic security protocols. Security has since been tightened, and guards are now actively verifying the identity of every driver at the factory gates. While Detective Hatley said that the extra checks are definitely helping, Tesla and the rest of the electronics industry still have a long way to go to completely stop freight theft.
