Tesla this week surprised the North American market with a new product launch. The Model Y Long Wheelbase (or Model Y L) is now available to order in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This debut comes after we broke the news last month that Tesla was planning an exclusive U.S. launch of the Model Y L this fall.

The Model Y L is rolling out in the U.S. with a limited-run Launch Series trim. We have been spotting the Model Y L on U.S. roads and at factories for months now, so the launch of the extended-wheelbase variant has been a while in the making for buyers who need true multi-passenger comfort.

Loaded Launch Series Perks

To get the ball rolling, Tesla is throwing a bundle of software and design upgrades at early buyers. Every single Launch Series order comes standard with one year of free Full Self-Driving (Supervised), one year of free Supercharging, and one year of Premium Connectivity.

Even better, you can snag some design customizations without paying more. Buyers can select any exterior paint finish at no extra charge, including Stealth Gray, Pearl White, Marine Blue, Diamond Black, Ultra Red, and Cosmic Silver, the latter of which is making its first-ever appearance on an American market Tesla. For the cabin, you can choose between All Black or Zen Grey interior themes, both of which come paired with a sleek all-black headliner. The Model Y L is the first Tesla to bring the Zen Grey interior trim to the U.S., previously exclusive to markets served by Gigafactory Shanghai.

You also get a choice of wheel sizes for free. The 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheel setup delivers the advertised 325 miles of range, while upgrading to the 20-inch Uberhelix wheels drops the range slightly to 320 miles. The package even includes a tow hitch, which is usually a $1,000 add-on.

To make sure these early units feel special, they feature exclusive Launch Series rear badging, premium floor mats, custom puddle lights, soft suede dashboard inserts, and Launch Series door sill plates.

U.S. Pricing and Delivery Window

The Model Y L originally debuted in China last summer, starting at 339,000 yuan (about $50,000 USD). It sold really well, eventually making its way to markets like Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of Asia, and it is now landing in the U.S. as a premium option. The new Model Y L Premium AWD Launch Series starts at $61,990, placing it right at the very top of the domestic Model Y family.

This pricing strategy marks a notable shift from how Tesla positions the vehicle internationally. In other global markets like Australia, the Model Y L slots neatly between the mid-tier dual-motor AWD option and the Performance trim. For the American market, the Launch Series is actually priced higher than the Model Y Performance.

Tesla is likely relying on the Launch Series bundle of free software, paint, and hardware upgrades to help offset that pricing premium. The specialized launch branding suggests that only the first few production waves will receive these bundled features. There is no official word yet on how long the Launch Series will be available for or when a stripped-down standard trim might arrive. Model Y L production is already spooling up at Giga Texas in Austin, with the first wave of customer deliveries officially slated to hit American driveways this September.
