Ordering an autonomous ride-hailing vehicle through Tesla’s Robotaxi service is becoming a much more transparent experience, removing the mystery of who — if anyone — will be sitting in the front row when the car pulls up. The Robotaxi app just added a smart quality-of-life feature that gives users clear expectations as soon as a trip is locked in.
Abhimanyu Yadav (@WorldlyReviewer) spotted the feature and posted about it on X, revealing that when the Robotaxi app dispatches a supervised vehicle, you now receive an alert that reads: “This ride will have a safety driver present in the driver’s seat.” Tesla’s Robotaxi service currently only uses safety drivers in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it operates as a ride-hailing service, or during validation or initial testing in other regions.
Safety drivers in Tesla’s Robotaxi vehicles have their hands off the wheel while FSD drives, but they’re there to take over in case something happens. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the app currently sends out a similar notification for when there’s a human monitor in the front passenger seat and no one behind the wheel. That would be an excellent next addition, completely taking the guesswork out of ordering a Tesla Robotaxi.

Removing the Guesswork for Riders
This feature rolls out shortly after Tesla celebrated its first full year of the Robotaxi service since the pilot program went live in Austin back in June 2025. The development teams have pushed out a plethora of improvements to the Robotaxi app since it first became available on an invite-only basis, and these new supervision tags further add to them. Tesla also finally launched the Robotaxi app on Android earlier this spring, expanding the user base beyond the original iOS tester pool.
The new notification gives app users more clarity on the kind of ride they should expect. Hopefully, Tesla will take this feature to the next level by expanding it to rides with safety monitors as well. That would be an extremely welcome change for those who use the network specifically hoping to experience being driven around by a completely empty car, as they’ll instantly get to know whether their ride is unsupervised or if a safety monitor will occupy a front seat.
This transparent labeling is aimed squarely at the California market for now. Currently, the Robotaxi network operates across five regions, all using varying rules. Dallas, Houston, and the newly launched territory of Miami run entirely driverless, unsupervised trips in Model Y Robotaxis. Austin, meanwhile, operates a mixed fleet of fully unsupervised Robotaxis and vehicles with safety monitors in the front passenger seat. The San Francisco Bay Area is currently the lone market that remains locked strictly to safety driver setups.
Paving the Way for Cybercab Integration
Providing clear notifications about vehicle supervision is an essential step as Tesla’s ride-hailing infrastructure matures and transitions toward a completely driverless fleet. Having automated pop-ups to clarify driver presence handles the immediate software side of the user experience, while the hardware roadmap is moving along just as fast.
The true linchpin for Tesla’s Robotaxi plans is the launch of the Cybercab. The purpose-built robotaxi started testing on public roads in Austin recently without a steering wheel, pedals, or any manual driving controls. While Tesla expands Cybercab testing and starts offering rides in a few more markets, broader Robotaxi scaling will ultimately have to wait until Full Self-Driving version 15 comes out later this year or early next year.
