Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing network appears to be mapping out its next geographical expansion, stretching its footprint further into the American South. Spotters have noticed fresh Model Y Robotaxis hitting the streets in brand new territories, signaling that localized validation work is accelerating behind the scenes.
According to longtime Tesla watcher Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt), specialized Robotaxi testing vehicles are actively logging miles in Louisiana. Merritt noted that Tesla has started testing its Robotaxi service in New Orleans, where a fleet of Model Ys carrying Texas manufacturer plates has been spotted.
Spotting the Camera Washer Tell
If the sheer volume of matching crossovers in the nest and the temporary factory plates weren’t proof enough, these specific cars have a hardware tell that gives the whole plan away. The vehicles running around the Crescent City are equipped with integrated rear camera washers, a telltale sign of Model Ys destined for the Robotaxi network.
Keeping the cameras clear is absolutely mandatory for vehicles meant to drive autonomously. Tesla's modified Model Y Robotaxis are outfitted with four independent camera washers, including ones for the repeater lenses. Meanwhile, the upcoming, purpose-built Cybercab ups the ante by including a dedicated water jet for every single camera housing on its body.
Tesla’s Current Five-Market Robotaxi Footprint
This fresh validation work comes shortly after Tesla celebrated its first full year of the Robotaxi service, which originally kicked off as a closed pilot program in Austin back in June 2025. The platform has since expanded to five active commercial markets, each utilizing a slightly different operational framework:
Austin: A hybrid mix of unsupervised rides and supervised rides featuring a front-passenger safety monitor.
San Francisco Bay Area: Supervised rides only, utilizing a safety driver behind the wheel.
Dallas: Fully unsupervised rides.
Houston: Fully unsupervised rides.
Miami: Fully unsupervised rides.
Miami stands as the latest region to join the network, with unsupervised rides launching to the public just last week. To help passengers navigate these varying regional setups, the software team recently updated the Robotaxi app to tell users if their ride has a safety driver before the vehicle even arrives at their curb.
Future Robotaxi Scaling
New Orleans is just the latest city to join the Robotaxi validation queue. Beyond Louisiana, test fleets have been spotted tracking data across Arizona, various parts of Texas (not surprising, given the Robotaxi service’s birthplace of Austin), Nevada, where Tesla has already filed permits for up to 5,000 Robotaxi vehicles, and other major cities in Florida.
While the field testing looks promising, commercial rides aren’t expected to make their way to more than a few new markets in the coming months. Tesla leadership has explicitly stated that wider Robotaxi scaling will have to wait until Full Self-Driving version 15 comes out. The upcoming software architecture is expected to debut late this year or early next year with a massive 10x parameter increase over current builds.
Once that advanced AI model rolls out alongside the steering wheel-less Cybercabs Tesla just started validating on public roads in Austin, testing grounds like New Orleans will be perfectly positioned to transition from early mapping fleets into full commercial operations.
