For years, the dream of a truly affordable mass-market electric vehicle has been the holy grail for Tesla fans. It’s been called different things by enthusiast circles, mainly the Model 2 and the Model Q, but Tesla leadership usually referred to it simply as the $25,000 or “cheaper” model. This was supposed to be the entry-level Tesla that would finally put a clean commuter car into every standard suburban driveway.
However, plans for this uber-affordable hatchback took a back seat as Tesla’s priorities shifted. We got a neat glimpse of what could have been thanks to a recent X post from Tesla enthusiast @DominicBRNKMN, who shared some concept images of the Model 2/Q. The renders reveal a beautifully stubby, ultra-compact vehicle heavily influenced by the design language of Tesla's post-Juniper refresh Model Y.
The Death of the $25k Tesla
Despite the massive community excitement and consumer appetite for a $25k EV with Tesla’s futuristic design language, the vehicle is unlikely to ever see the light of day. Tesla reportedly ceased all internal plans to manufacture the vehicle behind closed doors in early 2024. Instead, corporate priorities shifted entirely toward autonomous ride-hailing with the Robotaxi service and purpose-built Cybercab, as well as robotics.
For a long time, the public expected a direct mini-crossover design from Tesla to show up as a smaller, cheaper alternative to premium passenger cars. The community tracked the Model 2’s development for years, with shareholders bringing it up at every quarterly earnings call. For much of its rumored development, the Model 2 was expected to just be a compact version of the Model Y with a few necessary compromises in premium cabin features to lower the retail price.
Unfortunately, the economic realities of building an entry-level vehicle at this point in the game changed things. Fierce competitive pressure from Chinese automakers like BYD was flooding the global market with incredibly cheap, entry-level electric cars. Trying to squeeze profitable margins out of a traditional $25k subcompact became a massive financial gamble, pushing product development onto a completely different trajectory, one that Tesla was already well ahead of the curve in — autonomy.
The “Standard” Strategy Shift
While the $25k baseline remained frozen, Tesla looked for a different solution to lower the barrier to entry. Over the last year, Musk and the rest of Tesla’s leadership frequently teased cheaper electric vehicles. Many buyers assumed this meant the $25k model was finally arriving on assembly lines, but the strategy turned out to be deliberate downsizing of the existing vehicle lineup.
Instead of building a brand-new subcompact from scratch, engineering teams trimmed down the fat on existing cars. This resulted in the “Standard” Rear-Wheel Drive configurations of the Model 3 and Model Y, which launched last fall and are now sold as just the Model 3 RWD/AWD and Model Y RWD/AWD. While the entry-level Model 3 launched as Tesla’s most affordable vehicle to date at a much more accessible $36,990 price point, that’s still a far cry from the coveted $25,000 threshold.
As for brand-new consumer cars, no active rumors are pointing toward an ultra-affordable compact vehicle in the pipeline. That said, Musk did tease a new SUV earlier this spring that he noted would be ”way cooler than a minivan”, though it will target a completely different demographic than an urban hatchback.
Fulfilling the Prophecy Through Cybercab?
Even though Tesla’s plans for a $25k compact EV have stalled, its underlying engineering foundation is very much alive. Reports from around the time of the Model 2’s axing suggested that the low-cost platform would live on, with the Cybercab also being manufactured on it. What’s more, Musk has maintained that the Cybercab would render a $25k vehicle irrelevant ever since Tesla decided on making a robotaxi.
The driverless project has progressed at a remarkable pace. Mass production officially kicked off back in April at Gigafactory Texas, which was also where the Model 2 was supposed to be built. Tesla started testing production Cybercab units without steering wheels, pedals, or any other human driving controls on public streets in Austin just last week. With final validation units actively mapping public streets without manual driving controls, all signs point to an imminent public launch.
There’s an interesting twist to this driverless future that could end up vindicating the Model 2/Q. Musk previously indicated that Tesla will eventually sell the Cybercab to everyday consumers, so if manufacturing costs drop low enough, the Cybercab could end up accidentally fulfilling the original $25,000 vehicle prophecy on its own.
Hitting that ultra-low price target will still be a tall task, especially since we recently discovered the Cybercab features a next-generation FSD computer not currently available in Tesla’s mainstream lineup. If the team can crack the production economics, the autonomous two-seater might become the spiritual successor to the cheap family car that never was.
