A pricing glitch on Tesla’s Supercharger network has left drivers facing surprisingly expensive bills at some Canadian locations over the last few weeks. Fortunately, Tesla has acknowledged the error and is taking steps to completely reimburse affected drivers.
The billing issue was spotted by longtime Supercharger watcher @MarcoRPi1 at a Supercharger site in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI). Because the Charlottetown location is the only active Supercharger in the entire province, the surge in prices hit anyone trying to charge on the island. After the issue was brought to its attention on X, the official @TeslaCharging account responded directly to confirm the pricing was incorrect, stating, “Correct pricing will be going live at midnight tonight. All fees since July 2nd 2026 will be waived.”

Local Regulations and Per-Minute Tiers
In Prince Edward Island, as well as sections of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, local regulations prevent Tesla from billing drivers for the exact amount of electricity (per kWh) added to the vehicle. Instead, Tesla has to use a per-minute pricing system that has different rate tiers based on charging speed.
This per-minute setup is completely different from Tesla’s usual per-kWh pricing scheme, and it’s also unlike the dynamic Supercharger pricing model it started introducing at Supercharger locations last year that adjusts rates based on station occupancy. While the error was originally caught in PEI, it looks like the incorrect pricing also extends to stations in the nearby province of New Brunswick. Due to the glitch, drivers ended up paying much more for each kWh added to their battery than they should have.
Turning Mistakes Into Free Charging
Tesla is compensation drivers for the mistake by making the affected sessions entirely free. Anyone who plugged in at these specific locations between July 2 and now will receive a full refund.
By completely waiving the fees instead of just calculating the difference, Tesla is turning a frustrating billing headache into a nice perk for local owners. The automated billing corrections should process automatically over the coming days. Earlier this spring, Tesla also started rolling out 3D Supercharger Site Maps in Canada.
