SpaceX is aggressively upgrading its satellite hardware to deliver a more compact and efficient internet setup for stationary users. With more than 10,000 satellites currently in orbit beaming down internet connectivity across the globe, the focus is shifting toward making the Starlink user terminal as capable, portable, and easy to manage as possible.
Starlink on Tuesday officially unveiled its next-generation hardware package, noting that the new setup is designed to deliver reliable, high-speed home internet while improving over the dish it replaces. According to the announcement, Starlink V5 has a smaller form factor and a lighter design with greater power efficiency than the Starlink V4 dish.

Next-Gen Performance Gains
The upgraded user terminal dwarfs the older V4 terminal in all but size, where it is actually much smaller. Space-wise, the V5 is nearly half the size of its predecessor by area and is remarkably lightweight.
Tesla and SpaceX watcher Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt) shared a to-scale size comparison chart on X illustrating just how much smaller the physical footprint has become, pointing out that the V5 dish is closer in size to (and actually lighter than) the portable Starlink Mini than to the V4 terminal it replaces.
Despite the smaller receiver size, network capability stays strong, supporting download speeds up to 375+ Mbps for everything from everyday browsing to heavy video streaming or online gaming.
The V5 dish also tackles a major pain point by drawing 50% less power than the older model, dropping average power consumption to just 35-50W. Structurally, it introduces a big jump in weather durability, featuring an operational wind resistance rating of 165 mph compared to the V4’s 60 mph rating.

Preparing for Gigabit Speeds
The launch of this smaller residential terminal arrives at a strategic time. Starlink has promised to hit gigabit-level speeds soon, and this hardware change appears positioned to handle that incoming network capacity.
Gigabit performance will help close the speed gap with terrestrial fiber providers, but the capability isn’t expected to be unlocked until Starlink starts deploying next-generation V3 satellites in healthy numbers. SpaceX plans to launch its first test batch of these Starlink V3 satellites during its next Starship flight test, slated for later this week, paving the way for the future of space-based connectivity.
