We have already seen Tesla testing Cybercab units with attached Starlink dishes on public roads before, and now the configuration is officially real. Tesla took to social media this week to reveal that its purpose-built robotaxi will come equipped with hardware straight from SpaceX.
A graphic shared on X by the official @tesla account shows off the Cybercab with an integrated Starlink V5 dish, alongside mission-critical hardware like eight external cameras, an FSD computer, and GPS/LTE antennas. The schematic was also spotted in person by @Starscream_SJC at a newly reopened Tesla showroom in San Jose, California, sitting right alongside a production Cybercab model (no steering wheels or pedals) on display.

Not Required for Driving, But Critical for Coverage
Following the post, community speculation immediately blew up over why an autonomous vehicle would need satellite internet. Tesla AI Chief Ashok Elluswamy chimed in to clarify the system’s exact role:

The Cybercab already includes dual GPS for redundancy and precise positioning, alongside standard 5G cellular modems. These handle navigation, while the Cybercab’s next-generation FSD computer (which is more powerful than anything currently available on Tesla’s consumer models) handles the actual driving. Elluswamy’s comments suggest this setup is a design concept Tesla has finalized for when the fleet requires more bandwidth than standard 5G LTE networks can supply, rather than something that's currently a part of production Cybercab builds.
That’s not to say Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi won’t ever need satellite internet, though. Because the Cybercab lacks a steering wheel or pedals, maintaining communication with home base is vital. If the vehicle encounters an issue or a complex scenario it can’t navigate, a low-latency connection lets remote human monitors check camera feeds and provide real-time guidance. Having a satellite dish mounted right on the vehicle ensures it stays reachable even in cellular dead zones.
Choosing V5 Over Mini
Tesla’s Supercharger network already relies on Starlink for on-site Wi-Fi, and there have long been rumors of Tesla eventually replacing the standard cellular connections on its vehicles with its sister company’s satellite internet. However, the dedicated robotaxi platform is claiming the tech first.
Tesla’s new Cybercab implementation features the Starlink V5 dish, which SpaceX unveiled last week. It’s attached to the rear liftgate that covers the Cybercab’s spacious trunk storage. Starlink V5 is 48% smaller by area and 62% lighter than the V4 dish, while drawing half the power.
Interestingly, Tesla passed on using the portable “Mini” dish that’s designed specifically for on-the-go connectivity. The Starlink Mini is even getting a built-in battery for standalone operation with an upcoming hardware refresh. Instead of using the portable terminal, Tesla chose the full-sized residential-tier form factor, concluding it offered the precise performance balance required for vehicle mounting.
The Cybercab is inching closer to public deployment, with droves of production units seen staging at Gigafactory Texas as Tesla ramps up public validation of the final, steering wheel-less design. It’s also set to start offering autonomous rides across the Giga Texas campus to employees ahead of its public debut, and adding Starlink to the mix ensures the driverless fleet stays connected wherever it rolls.
