Tesla’s push to bring modern autonomous capabilities to older vehicles is hitting a few bumps on the road. Now that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v14 Lite is reaching a wider audience, drivers are noticing an issue with low-speed reversing maneuvers.
After Tesla started rolling out FSD v14 Lite publicly earlier this week, users began sharing clips online showing the system struggling to detect objects behind the car.
Reversing Issues Caught on Camera
Several drivers took to social media to highlight instances where the vehicle failed to stop while backing up with an object in its path. In posts on X, users documented various low-speed collisions and close calls.
“V14 Lite does not care about hitting things while reversing,” noted @SantoroSystems. Their Hardware 3 (HW3/AI3) Tesla, running the new FSD v14 Lite software, backed straight into a blue plastic trash bin sitting in a driveway.

Another driver, @TexasTSLA, conducted a test where the driver pressed the new Start Self-Driving button on FSD v14 Lite to engage the system from Park, and it had to reverse out of the driveway to get to the destination. FSD v14 Lite attempted to back up while obstructed by a person crouching behind the car, with the driver manually disengaging the system when it showed no signs of stopping. “FSD 14 LITE ‘notably’ crashes into me. Time to issue a recall @Tesla_AI,” they said on X, before following up with a video showing “it will likely hit a human.” Check out their clips demonstrating the issue below:

User @WaitWhat noticed similar behavior at a Supercharger station, sharing a video of their Tesla slowly backing into a Supercharger stall pillar. “This 14 Lite almost hit the supercharger in the same areas where mine hit the garbage can,” they said in an X post.

Because reversing is a low-speed action, these incidents carry much lower risks than highway driving, but they still represent a clear bug that needs fixing.
The problem isn’t entirely unique to FSD v14 Lite, although the instances there have far outweighed what we’ve seen with the full version of FSD v14. In this clip below, you can see how a vehicle with v14 tries to park in a parking spot that already has a motorcycle, and the driver had to intervene.

Bridging the Gap for Legacy Hardware
FSD v14 Lite is a distilled, compressed version of the main v14 stack. It was developed specifically to bring newer capabilities down to HW3 vehicles, which only have about 15% of the memory bandwidth of their current-gen Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) counterparts. Tesla engineers had to do some real black magic to fit almost the entire v14 feature set into these memory-constrained FSD computers, but it looks like doing so broke something in the reversing logic.
When FSD v14 Lite originally debuted last month, the rollout stopped at some early access testers. It also didn’t have any identifiable version numbers attached, so we didn’t expect any future software updates. Tesla subverted those expectations when an updated version of FSD v14 Lite started rolling out earlier this week, bringing new features and improvements before Tesla leadership confirmed a wide release shortly after.
Ultimately, FSD v14 Lite is a stopgap solution meant to tide HW3 owners over until Tesla can offer hardware upgrades to make their vehicles capable of achieving unsupervised autonomy. Given that Tesla has shown it can rapidly update this branch, an over-the-air patch for this reversing issue should drop once the team analyzes and fixes it.
