Talking to your Tesla just took a massive leap forward. Rather than relying on rigid legacy voice commands for core vehicle functions like climate control, Tesla owners can now interact with their vehicles through fluid, natural conversations with Grok.
The new Grok voice commands for vehicle functions are officially rolling out as part of the Summer Update, which was announced last week and began hitting customer cars over the weekend as software update 2026.26.
Hands-Free Vehicle Control Through Natural Speech
When SpaceXAI’s Grok chatbot made its automotive debut last summer, it operated mostly as a screen-bound conversational assistant. Tesla later added support for navigation commands, letting drivers configure and edit their routes by talking to Grok. With location-based reminders rolling out in software update 2026.14 earlier this spring, you could even ask Grok to remind you to take your gym bag out of the trunk when you get home or buy milk on your way back.
The Summer Update expands those capabilities dramatically, allowing Grok to handle core vehicle hardware and software functions. Drivers can now place phone calls, search for and queue up music, open the glovebox, adjust the climate system, and more, all using casual sentences. Here’s an example of Grok turning off the HVAC system:
In practice, the integration even handles complex, multi-part commands effortlessly. For example, you can tell the assistant to navigate you to work, adjust the cabin climate, and change the Steering Weight setting from Light to Heavy all at the same time, and the system processes all three requests simultaneously without missing a beat.
Beyond basic toggles, we expect Grok to be able to control seat heating/ventilation as well, and you can even ask the assistant to pull up specific menus directly. Saying, "Can you show me the Steering Weight in Settings?" instantly opens the corresponding Dynamics tab on the touchscreen. You can then follow up by asking it to interact with what’s on the screen, and the assistant does so.
Initiating a conversation with Grok is as simple as saying the recently added "Hey Grok" wake word, while saying "goodbye" or anything along those lines dismisses the assistant from the screen. Adding calls, media playback, and hardware controls to Grok’s existing navigation and reminder features essentially covers all of the average Tesla driver’s most-used voice commands.
Global Rollout and What’s Coming Next
Grok was exclusive to the U.S. at launch, before making its way to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and select European and Asian countries. Alongside these new vehicle controls, Tesla’s Summer Update also expands Grok availability across Europe and to additional Asian markets, including India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. This new functionality will be available everywhere Grok is.
Deeply linking the assistant to core vehicle systems lays the foundation for future software leaps. Elon Musk confirmed earlier this year that Full Self-Driving integration for Grok is already in development, later noting that Tesla owners will be able to control FSD by talking to Grok sometime this fall.
As voice interaction with your Tesla shifts from rigid commands to conversational co-piloting, controlling driving modes and cabin settings (and eventually FSD) hands-free will soon become second nature.
