Over-the-air software updates are second nature for Tesla owners, but usually, those patches target the vehicle itself. In an unexpected hardware drop, Tesla has started pushing a firmware update for its portable Mobile Connector charging units.
The update was highlighted by Tesla community member @koalafiedtesla, who posted a screenshot on X showcasing the installation alert on their vehicle screen and said:
“Never heard of a Tesla mobile connector getting a software update but thats interesting nonetheless.”
How Tesla’s Mobile Connector Updates Work
Unlike the vehicle itself or Tesla’s other residential charging hardware, the Mobile Connector lacks built-in cellular or Wi-Fi antennas. Instead, the vehicle acts as the middleman. Your Tesla downloads the firmware update over its own internet connection when plugged in using the Mobile Connector, holds the file, and then transfers the package directly to the device.
This specific rollout appears to target Gen 2 Mobile Connector units. It remains unclear if other hardware builds, such as Tesla’s Gen 3 Mobile Connector with PowerShare capabilities, will receive the same software push.
The patch itself is delivered without much fanfare, requiring no reboot or manual installation prompts. Once the download begins, the vehicle screen simply displays an alert confirming that a charge connector update is in progress.
Portable Trickle Charging and Home Options
The Mobile Connector remains one of Tesla’s most versatile accessories. Often used for “trickle charging” at home or on the road, it plugs into a standard 120-volt household outlet to draw 12 amps, adding about 3 to 4 miles of range per hour. It can also plug into a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet, from which it draws up to 32 amps and delivers roughly 30 miles of range per hour.
