Tesla has confirmed that a Cybercab launch event is coming, and the timing lines up closely with reports that its purpose-built Cybercab could enter Robotaxi service before the end of August. Tesla is even giving Robotaxi riders a chance to attend the event.
Tesla Cybercab Launch Event
Tesla officially confirmed a Cybercab launch event on its Robotaxi X account by announcing a contest for robotaxi ride-hailers.
Last night, Tesla posted that riders through August 23rd would win a shot to attend the Cybercab launch event. The more rides a rider completes, the more chances they’ll receive. Tesla will announce the winners on August 25.
This is the first time Tesla has talked about a Cybercab event, but details are surprisingly scarce. Tesla didn’t announce a location or date for the event, but given some rumors from The Information and the contest deadline, it sounds like the event will take place in Austin at the end of August or early September.
The Information reported that Tesla is preparing to introduce Cybercab to the public in Austin as soon as August. Given Tesla’s contest announcement, this report appears to be accurate. Last month, we reported that Tesla was starting employee Cybercab rides soon, and the next step would be to open them to the public.
Update: Tesla has now launched an event page explaining how users can win a ticket to the event, even without riding in a Robotaxi.
Stockpiling Cybercabs
Tesla has already been producing Cybercabs at Gigafactory Texas, and large groups of the vehicles have appeared in several areas outside Austin. Recent sightings include more than 100 Cybercabs in Dallas, and other smaller fleets have also been spotted in several areas around the U.S.
The Cybercab could expand beyond Austin relatively quickly after its initial launch. Musk previously announced that Tesla’s robotaxi plans would not expand significantly until FSD v15, which the Cybercab will likely run.
Cybercab Gets More Powerful FSD Hardware
Cybercab differs from Tesla’s current Model Y Robotaxi fleet under the skin. As we previously reported, production Cybercabs use a more powerful FSD computer with more memory than current hardware 4 vehicles. It’s unclear whether they’re running AI5 or AI4+, but it’s likely one of the two upcoming hardware versions.
FSD v15 includes roughly 10 times as many parameters as current FSD builds. Cybercab’s additional computing resources could give it more room to run Tesla’s next-generation FSD models.
Cybercab Features Unique Hardware
The Cybercab is a unique vehicle, quite a bit different from consumer models, and there’s likely much more to it than we know. The Cybercab features camera washers on all exterior cameras, an integrated Starlink antenna, more powerful FSD hardware, and more.
It’s unlike Tesla to rapidly roll anything out, so don’t expect a huge event where the Cybercab is instantly accessible across multiple regions. However, with Cybercab production well underway and vehicles appearing across multiple states, Tesla could plan to quickly roll out the Cybercab in additional regions shortly after its Austin debut.
For now, all we know is that Tesla is planning a Cybercab launch event, likely in late August or early September.
